About the role

The Office of the Public Defender is recruiting for experienced criminal investigators.

Responsibilities

• Manage an assigned investigative caseload
• Conduct difficult and complex investigations
• Perform a full range of criminal investigations, including those of a complex nature
• Use a broad scope of investigative techniques
• Show a high degree of initiative, judgment, and independence of action

Requirements

• A background investigation will be conducted, including a DOJ/FBI fingerprint check and drug screening
• A major portion of all investigations are conducted in the field
• Travel throughout the County is required
• A valid California class C driver license is required at time of appointment
• Employees in this class may be required to use personal vehicles and show proof of automobile liability insurance
• All position locations are subject to rotation based on the needs of the department
• Offices are located throughout the county
• Positions may be full-time, extra-help or part-time, please indicate your availability on the application

Qualifications

• Two years full-time investigative experience as a Public Defender Investigator in the State of California (Option A)
• Three years full-time investigative experience as a Public Defender Investigator in any state other than California (Option B)
• Three years full-time experience with primary responsibility for conducting investigations for a city, county, state or federal government law enforcement or intelligence agency as the primary case officer and with the job title of detective, investigator, agent or variant communicating the same function (Option C)

• Able to interview or interrogate withdrawn, hostile, or otherwise challenging persons
• Able to deduce, extrapolate and formulate logical conclusions and sound recommendations
• Prepare clear, concise, and comprehensive reports

Selection Process

• There will be a written examination and writing exercise on February 3, 2009, covering Investigation, Rules of Evidence and Legal Knowledge, Interviewing Skills and Interpersonal Relations, Evidence Collection and Processing, and Written Communication
• The writing exercise, multiple choice test, and evaluation of qualifications will be used to determine success in the examination
• The final ranking will be based on the evaluation of qualifications based on the application and supplemental questionnaire
