A Brief Overview
Provides high quality, individualized, family centered care to pediatric patients ranging from extreme prematurity through adolescence in the critical care transport environment.
Care and transport of the critically ill patient is supported through the use of the EMT scope of practice in accordance with the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems (CAMTS) standards and hospital policies and procedures.
Varies schedules to include weekend and holiday patterns.
Essential Functions
- Demonstrates responsiveness to the organizational functions of the transport process.
- Demonstrates knowledge of ambulance operations.
- Demonstrates up-to-date knowledge of transport equipment location, function and restocking procedures.
- Safely drives the ambulance according to the Standards of the US Department of Transportation, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and EMS National Standards.
- Safely operates ambulances on emergent and non-emergent transports.
- Utilizes lights and sirens as per Children’s Policy adhering to standard safety practices.
- Works in conjunction with Fleet Coordinator to ensure ambulances are functioning and serviced as scheduled.
- Complies with ambulance, helicopter, and fixed wing operational safety in accordance with current guidelines.
- Checks, cleans, and stocks transport bags and equipment. Ensures equipment is in good working order.
- Maintains all transport equipment in a state of mission readiness by checking all equipment at the beginning of each shift, noting any discrepancies and ensuring steps toward resolution.
- Cleans vehicles and equipment and restocks bags after a transport.
- Completes daily, weekly, monthly and ongoing equipment checklists.
- Completes educational and professional development requirements.
- Assists with patient care within scope of practice including: obtaining vital signs and assisting with assessments and treatments as necessary; placing patient on transport monitors; moving and securing patient in transport cot/incubator; initiating action to prevent current or potential risk to a patient in an emergency situation; adhering to individualized patient/family plan of care to meet identified needs; assessing patient/family need for education and using an individualized approach in delivery style; communicating changes to medical crew.

- Professionally supports the assigned unit, as seen through interactions with patients, families, Children’s Hospital and Transport staff.
- Accepts and completes other assigned tasks in a professional manner.
Education Qualifications
- High School Diploma or G.E.D.
- Completion of an EMT course.
Experience Qualifications
- Minimum 1 year of experience as an EMT.
Preferred Skills And Abilities
- Ability to perform a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another without loss of efficiency or composure and ability to perform under stressful conditions when confronted with multiple requests, demonstrating prioritizing skills.
- Ability to work in an environment that is exposed to non-conventional motions, noise, vibration, fumes and extreme heat/cold.
Licenses and Certifications
- EMT - Emergency Medical Tech current and valid in the state of Nebraska.
- PARAMEDIC - Paramedic – Licensed current and valid in the state of Nebraska.
- BLS - Basic Life Support through the American Heart Association.
- If in transport, must successfully complete the Certified Emergency Vehicle Operators Course (CEVO) or the Emergency Vehicle Operators Course (EVOC) within 30 Days.
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable motor vehicle driving record.
