About the role
The Unit Coordinator/Secretary at South Shore Health's Emergency Department coordinates nursing staff, patients, physicians, and other hospital departments. They perform general receptionist duties and assist with patient flow.
Responsibilities
- Communicates with nursing staff, clinicians, and support services.
- Answers questions and assists patients and their families.
- Scans necessary orders to the pharmacy and alerts nurses to STAT orders.
- Reviews and follows up on CPOE orders and order entry.
- Keeps bed track and PCS systems updated.
- Books appointments through central scheduling.
- Faxes necessary discharge paperwork and medication reconciliation.
- Prints, reviews, and inquires about unit reports.
- Completes daily chart audits and shift to shift reports.
- Ensures precaution rooms match med track and door tags are correct.
- Orders supplies from Stores and collaborates with Operations Supervisor to maintain par levels.
- Ensures the unit environment meets regulatory requirements and adheres to safety protocols.
- Functions as a preceptor for new employees.
- Communicates appropriately and effectively using the chain of command.
- Stays informed about changes in hospital policy, procedure, and equipment.
- Complies with legal, regulatory, and ethical practice standards.
- Welcomes family members at all times according to patient preferences.
- Considers the individual needs of each person with whom they interact.
Requirements
Preferred High School Diploma/GED, basic computer knowledge, and ability to communicate effectively and document information accurately.
Qualifications
- Basic medical terminology knowledge preferred.
- Ability to deal efficiently and effectively with a wide variety of individuals.
Skills
Effective communication, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
