About the role
Under direct supervision of the physician and/or designee, assists in examination and treatment of patients in the Emergency Department.
Responsibilities
- Performs within the scope and training of the Emergency Department Technician (EDT), consistent with State/Federal regulations including EMTALA, HIPAA, patient confidentiality, and risk management.
- Provides competent patient care for all ages, acuities, and conditions served by the facility, ensuring age-specific and culturally sensitive care.
- Communicates clearly and courteously with all members of the healthcare team, following appropriate lines of authority.
- Completes duties with regard to safety practices and policies, including infection control, workplace safety, and management of aggressive behaviors.
- Demonstrates proficiency in computer and telecommunications use for documentation, tracking, and conveying information.
- Maintains required certifications and continuing education per department and facility standards.
- Establishes priorities based on patient needs and available unit resources (time, personnel, equipment, and supplies).
- Documents patient care and unit activities in a timely, accurate, and concise manner.
- Assists with rooming and undressing patients at the direction of the RN.
- Obtains, records, and reports vital signs, EKGs, heights, weights, and inputs/outputs of patients as directed.
- Draws blood as part of job responsibilities.
- Assists physicians and nurses with procedures, including positioning, draping, prepping, wound cleaning, application of dressings, orthopedic devices, splints, and crutch fitting.
- Applies monitoring devices and prepares patients for suturing.
- Assists patients with ambulation, bathroom needs, and transportation as required.
- Assists in emergency situations, including resuscitation.
- Assists with the discharge process under the direction of a physician or nurse.
- Cleans ED gurneys and equipment to ensure efficient provision of care.
- Ensures patient belongings are collected, bagged, and tagged with a completed checklist.
- Provides post-mortem care.
- Prepares requisitions for lab, imaging reports, and medical records.
- Performs basic clerical duties, including pharmacy, lab, nutrition, and imaging pick-ups and deliveries (e.g., specimen transport).
- Inventories, orders, unpacks, and distributes supplies, forms, and linens.
- Maintains cleanliness, stocking, and organization of patient care areas, utility rooms, and storage rooms.
- Cleans and processes instruments per facility infection control policy.
- Performs quality control checks of urine dipsticks (as applicable).
- Demonstrates knowledge of community resources.
- Pulls charts from the file room as necessary.
- Completes after-hours admission paperwork and applies splints per MD orders.
- Performs receptionist duties, including cash handling, customer service, greeting patients, and completing paperwork.
- Demonstrates proper body mechanics and lift techniques for patient transport.
- For Emergency Department Technician II: Performs casting and/or Ortho Tech I duties as outlined in the Master Agreement, including phlebotomy and EKG.
- Performs other related duties as necessary.
Requirements
- Six (6) months of related experience as an Emergency Medical Technician, Certified Nursing Assistant, or Medical Assistant with certification as specified by the Medical Board of California, or equivalent (e.g., military experience).
- Completion of an ED or UCC externship in an unlicensed assistive personnel program, or completion of the first semester of clinical coursework in a nursing program may substitute for experience.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Phlebotomy Technician II Certificate (California) or Phlebotomy Technician I Certificate (California).
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Demonstrated ability to use a personal computer.
- Effective written and oral communication skills in English.
- Good interpersonal skills and knowledge of medical terminology.
- Willingness to work in a Labor Management Partnership environment.
Schedule
- Shift: Evening (03:00 PM – 11:30 PM).
- Workdays: Sunday through Saturday (variable).
- Job Schedule: Call-in/On-Call.
Pay
Pay Range: $43.01 - $45.25 per hour. Actual base pay determined at offer will be based on labor market data, internal alignment, and a candidate's years of relevant work experience, education, certifications, skills, and geographic location.
