Emergency Department Technician
About the Role
This position is responsible for providing patient care and assisting health care providers in performing assigned patient procedures within the scope of training. The role receives general supervision from RNs, APNs, PAs, or Physicians in delivering care to patients in the Emergency Department (ED) at Banner Boswell Medical Center, which specializes in diseases of the elderly and primarily treats adults, with pediatric cases either discharged or transferred.
Responsibilities
- Perform assigned procedures under general supervision, including but not limited to:
- Electrocardiogram testing (EKG)
- Wound cleansing
- Initial, repeat, and orthostatic vital sign measurements
- Application of monitor leads
- Specimen collection
- Transport of stable telemetry or non-monitored patients to nursing units
- Perform advanced skills (where state statute permits), such as:
- Blood glucose testing
- Phlebotomy
- Saline lock insertion and IV discontinuation
- Bladder (Foley) catheterization for patients twelve years and older
- Set up, prepare, and assist with patient exams and minor surgical or health procedures, including:
- Lumbar punctures
- Sterile instrument and field preparation
- Suturing lacerations
- Chest tube insertion
- Closed fracture reduction
- Gastric lavage
- Pelvic examinations
- Restraint application
- Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
- Apply orthopedic devices, including pre-manufactured and plaster splints under physician direction.
- Perform specimen collection, ensuring accuracy in identification and integrity for all age criteria.
- Perform point-of-care testing (e.g., blood glucose, hemoccult, gastroccult) and quality control checks on equipment.
- Provide communication and updates to RNs, Physicians, or other providers regarding patient condition changes.
- Accurately record information in patient records, including vital signs, procedures, and equipment used.
- Monitor and maintain supply stock levels, including medication rooms, exam rooms, bedside carts, and specialty carts.
- Notify housekeeping, maintenance, and biomedical engineering to ensure a safe environment.
- Assist with health unit coordination tasks and reception responsibilities as needed.
- Attend department meetings and educational sessions.
- Assist in orienting and training new ED Technicians.
Requirements
- High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Either Emergency Medical Technician–Basic (EMT-B) or higher with state licensure/certification, or Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in the state of practice (required for new hires and transfers).
- Basic computer skills, effective communication (written and verbal), and problem-solving ability.
Preferred Qualifications
Additional related education and/or experience is preferred.
Schedule
- Full-time, evening shift: 12 PM – 12 AM, three shifts per week.
- Weekend and holiday rotations are required.
Pay
- Flat rate $1/hour weekend shift differential.
- 18% night shift differential where applicable.
