About the role

The Emergency Department (ED) Technician works under the direct supervision of registered nurses (RNs) and supports the interdisciplinary care team in delivering high-quality, compassionate care. As a vital member of the patient care team, the ED Tech performs a variety of clinical and non-clinical tasks to ensure efficient and effective patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Collect and document patient vital signs and observational data accurately and promptly.
  • Assist patients with activities of daily living (ADLs), ensuring comfort and dignity.
  • Collect, label, and transport laboratory specimens in accordance with established protocols.
  • Prepare and set up for minor procedures; assist RNs and physicians during procedures and resuscitation efforts.
  • Maintain patient and environmental safety, including serving as a sitter when assigned.
  • Support patient mobility, including safe transfers and transport to and from care areas.
  • Clean, sterilize, and maintain standard and specialized patient care equipment.
  • Manage supply logistics, ensuring availability and functionality of medical equipment and supplies.
  • Perform clerical and secretarial duties to support patient care coordination, including communication with physicians and other departments.
  • Participate in additional responsibilities such as scheduling, supply management, and shared governance committees, as assigned.

Requirements

  • BART or BLS at time of hire with commitment to get BART within six (6) months of hire date.
  • Minimum one (1) year of recent experience in an emergency department, psychiatric, or critical care setting.
  • Demonstrates ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication, organizational, and multitasking skills.
  • Commitment to patient safety, confidentiality, and quality care.
  • De-escalation and behavioral management training with a commitment to get CPI within six (6) months of the hire date.
  • Demonstrates computer knowledge and skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • California EMT, MHW and/or CNA certification.
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English).

Special Conditions

  • Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.
  • Must be able to work at UCSD East Campus, Hillcrest and La Jolla hospitals. Employees will float between the Emergency Department and Inpatient Departments.
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.

Pay

Annual Full Pay Range: $56,439 - $70,115 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $27.03 - $33.58

Schedule

  • Nights, 12-Hour Shifts, Sunday-Saturday
