About the role
This position is part of University Counseling Service (UCS) and serves as an embedded clinician in support of the College of Law. The role plays a key part in promoting student well-being, resilience, and success through a collaborative partnership between UCS and the College of Law.
Responsibilities
- Deliver individual, couples, and group therapy to law students using primarily brief-model interventions.
- Evaluate emotional and functional disorders and determine appropriate treatment plans.
- Carefully coordinate care, make referrals to community providers, and support students navigating services.
- Write and manage electronic mental health records consistent with professional standards.
- Serve as a supervisor for trainees at various levels, offering guidance, oversight, and competency development.
- Create and present workshops for law students, faculty, and staff to support mental health literacy.
- Build cooperative relationships with faculty, administrators, and student services.
- Provide expert consultation to campus partners regarding student behavior and mental health concerns.
- Maintain a focus on monitoring and improving counseling quality, evaluating therapeutic effectiveness, and contributing to continuous improvement initiatives.
- Collaborate on relapse-prevention strategies and support students in reducing recurrence of mental health crises.
- Prepare narrative and statistical reports, analyze trends, and identify service gaps.
- Maintain up-to-date with professional standards, monitoring evolving counseling practices, regulations, and standards relevant to university settings.
- Represent counseling services on departmental or university committees and communicate program needs.
- Teach clinical, outreach, and professional competencies to trainees and junior colleagues.
- Maintain independent clinical judgment, making sound decisions regarding exceptions, special issues, and complex student cases.
Requirements
- Doctoral degree in Counseling or Clinical Psychology from an APA-Accredited program, or Master’s degree in Social Work with clinical focus from a CSWE-Accredited program, or Master’s degree in Counseling from a CACREP-Accredited Program.
- Psychologist: Possession of a valid State of Iowa license as a psychologist within 18 months of hire.
- Social Worker or Mental Health Counselor: Licensed as an LISW, LMHC, or LMFT in the State of Iowa (License must be maintained as a condition of continued employment).
- Relevant post-degree clinical work experience (typically 1-3 years).
- Comprehensive knowledge of evidence-based and theory-driven mental health counseling practices, including assessment, crisis intervention, individual and group counseling, trauma-informed care, and case management.
- Exceptional ability to assess, oversee, and endure the delivery of high-quality mental health, trauma, and crisis management services.
