Embedded Rust Software Engineer
Onsite in Tampa, FL. Direct hire position requiring an active U.S. Government Secret Security Clearance and U.S. citizenship.
About the Role
Nickerson Talent Solutions (NTS) is seeking an Embedded Rust Software Engineer to join a growing defense engineering team developing mission-critical embedded systems and secure communications technologies. This is an outstanding opportunity for engineers with hands-on C and Rust experience who enjoy developing software close to the hardware in embedded, real-time, and resource-constrained environments. You'll play a key role in developing new embedded software while helping modernize legacy C code into Rust.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop embedded software using C and Rust
- Modernize existing C code by converting it to Rust
- Develop software for embedded processors, ARM-based systems, and SoCs
- Integrate software with firmware and hardware
- Troubleshoot low-level hardware, memory, and processor issues
- Develop and execute software testing
- Create technical documentation and maintain configuration control
- Collaborate with software, hardware, firmware, systems, and cybersecurity teams
Requirements
- Active U.S. Government Secret Security Clearance
- U.S. Citizenship
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field
- 2+ years of embedded software development experience
- Professional experience programming in both C and Rust
- Experience developing software close to the hardware
- Experience with ARM processors, embedded systems, or SoCs
- Experience integrating software with firmware and hardware
Preferred Qualifications
- 5+ years of embedded software development experience
- C-to-Rust migration experience
- no_std and heapless Rust
- Python
- ANSI C
- OpenOCD and GDB
- Experience with real-time or resource-constrained embedded systems
- Secure communications, COMSEC, or cryptographic systems
- Aerospace, defense, or other mission-critical environments

Pay
Salary: $100,000 - $170,000 with a 5% annual bonus. Relocation assistance available.
