ELL Teaching Assistant

About the role

This position assists certified professional staff in the classroom to meet instructional goals and objectives, freeing up time for teachers to focus on curriculum development and other aspects of the educational program.

Responsibilities

  • Assists and guides students in reinforcing reading, language arts, mathematics, computer instruction, and other skills.
  • Works with students individually and in small groups to reinforce basic learning and implement assigned programs.
  • Aids in the administration and correction of classroom exercises, tests, and assessments.
  • Assists in classroom preparations and strategies for reinforcing instructional materials and skills according to individual student needs.
  • Documents student learning and performance through record-keeping procedures.
  • Manages classroom behavior to minimize disruptions, ensure a safe and orderly environment, and keep students on task.
  • Supervises non-instructional areas such as lunch programs, bus duty, playground duty, corridor, study hall, and other related areas.
  • Accompanies students on field trips for supervision purposes.
  • Constructs, copies, and distributes educational materials as needed.
  • Supports parent involvement in student education through teacher contacts.
  • Assists students with special needs in all aspects of classroom instruction to maximize inclusion, learning, and achievement of Individualized Education Program (IEP) objectives.
  • Participates in the IEP process and serves as a resource for the student personnel evaluation team.
  • Assists students with disabilities with activities of daily living to enhance their participation in school or learning activities.
  • Follows all safety rules, procedures, and regulations governing assistance for all students, including those with disabilities or other special needs.
  • May assist in the training of other teaching assistants.

Additional Duties

  • Assist counseling or building administration, as needed.
  • Perform any other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma
  • Previous experience working with children

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards

Works in standard office and school building environments. Ability to work outdoors during outdoor student activities.
