Responsibilities
- Receives and processes referrals from appropriate sources
- Completes individual pupil evaluations in a timely manner
- Prepares course objectives and outline for course of study following curriculum guidelines or requirements of the state and school
- Schedules individual pupil staffing conferences according to timelines
- Utilizes differentiated instruction and the IEP guiding document for all instructions; initiates IEP conferences as appropriate
- Interprets pupils’ educational needs and progress to parents; maintains a log of parent contacts
- Identifies the specific learning needs of each pupil properly identified as disabled and maintains a clear record of the pupil’s instructional experience and progress in the permanent Special Education file
- Schedules pupils for instruction in cooperation with the principal and other members of the building staff, if itinerant
- Demonstrates skill in pupil assessment as the basis for instructional programming
- Evaluates pupil progress and makes appropriate recommendations
- Acts as a resource for building staff regarding disabilities methods and materials
- Coordinates all activities and procedures with the building principal and the regional Exceptional Education Coordinator
- Keeps accurate attendance records; maintains discipline in the classroom
- Participates in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops
- Plays other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree
- Missouri State Teacher Certification in Special Education (K-12)
Preferred Qualifications
- Certification in elementary education (for elementary level teaching)
- Certification in at least one subject area (for secondary level)
- Teaching experience in regular education
Physical Demands
- Sit, stand, walk, speak, hear, use hands, fingers, reach with hands and fingers
- Bend, stoop, lift objects of at least ten pounds
- Occasionally stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
- Visual ability requires mono and color vision, close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
