About the role
The Teacher Special Education BSS Elementary School provides instruction in academic, behavior, social, and self-care services to students with severe behavioral and emotional disabilities. The goal is to facilitate reintegration into the general education classroom and enhance students' behavioral and social abilities for successful transition into adulthood.
Responsibilities
- Provide consistent expectations and routines to facilitate a highly structured environment
- Utilize research-based Positive Behavior Support strategies to promote and maintain classroom management and therapeutic rapport with students
- Implement the Behavior Support Services Critical Elements as designated by the Program Manager
- Conduct instructional activities promoting and developing successful learning for multiple grade levels of students
- Maintain a collaborative working relationship with parents, students, and school/community stakeholders in developing clear, measurable IEP goals and objectives aligned with TEKS
- Communicate effectively with parents, staff, and other school personnel and community agencies
- Collect and analyze data in academics, behavior, social, and self-care services to monitor progress towards IEP goals and objectives
- Prepare and implement lesson plans developmentally and age-appropriate based on students' IEPs, accommodations, and modifications
- Collaborate with general education teachers to align lesson plans with general education curriculum
- Organize materials to implement daily lesson plans
- Conduct daily social skills training using research-based social skills curriculum
- Monitor student behaviors inside and outside both general and special education classrooms
- Maintain regular communication with students, parents, and staff regarding all aspects of the student program
- Direct and oversee the activities of an educational setting paraprofessional, aide, volunteer, or peer tutor
- Train and assign work to instructional support staff and provide input into performance evaluations
- Provide for basic needs of students who cannot care for themselves, including self-care skills
- Provide direct instruction in vocation and career development, communication skills, social and recreation/leisure skills, and transition to adult living
- Safeguard confidentiality with regard to students with disabilities
- Participate in and prepare paperwork for ARD meetings, including PLAAFPs, goals and objectives, BIPs, Autism, and Transportation supplements
- Conduct instructional and other professional activities consistent with state and federal law requirements
- Participate in appropriate professional development, including after-school teacher meetings
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Education or related field
- Valid Teaching Certification issued by Texas Education Agency appropriate to subject and grade level of assignment or demonstrated competency through TCCW
- Valid Special Education Certification EC-12, or Special Education Specialist Certification EC-12
- De-Escalation/Restraint Certification (CPI) preferred or required to obtain once hired (district-provided training)
- Ability to plan and implement lessons based on students' needs and abilities
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
- Demonstrated knowledge of appropriate technology equipment and software programs
- Prior proven ability to apply current research and theory to instructional programs
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions
- Work in classrooms, offices, work stations, and meeting rooms
- Occasional walking, standing, sitting, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting/carrying work-related items weighing less than 40 pounds
- Regular use of hands for tasks such as reaching, finger, handling, or feeling objects, tools, or controls; talking or hearing
- Close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus
- Exposure to the elements and inclement weather
- Lifting and positioning students, controlling behavior through hands-on intervention strategies and approved physical restraint strategies
- Exposure to bodily fluids and frequent childhood, pre-teen, and teen illnesses
