Elementary ELA Tutor

About the role
SmartStart Education seeks a small group ELA tutor to work with elementary school students on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Each small group consists of 1-4 students who have been identified as struggling with fundamental ELA skills. Students are from all grade levels, including 1st through 5th. The tutor will work with each group several times throughout the week at an elementary school in Landover Hills, MD 20784. Groups will take place within the classroom (push-in services) or outside of the classroom (pull-out services). Tutors should be flexible and comfortable with both settings.
Each tutor will be responsible for taking daily attendance and monitoring student progress using a personal device (mobile phone).
Schedule
The tutoring position runs from 9/15/2026 to 2/25/2027. Hours are:
- Tuesdays and Thursdays: 7:30 am – 1:40 pm EST
- Wednesdays: 7:30 am – 2:20 pm EST
Pay
$28.16/hr - $31.29/hr
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in any field (applications with anticipated graduation dates will not be considered)
- At least one year of teaching or tutoring experience in a school or other educational setting
- Mastery of elementary school ELA concepts and skills
- Understanding of the unique challenges faced by urban students, schools, and communities, including racial, socio-economic, and cultural disparities
- Passion and commitment to fostering student success
- Exemplary punctuality and adherence to schedules
- Strong communication skills for interacting with students, colleagues, and stakeholders
- Ability to commute to the designated location in Landover Hills, MD 20784
- Comfort navigating a school environment, including walking through hallways, classrooms, and stairways throughout the workday
