Elementary ELA Tutor

About the role
SmartStart Education seeks a small group ELA tutor to work with groups of 1-4 K–5 students who are struggling with fundamental ELA skills. Tutoring takes place at an elementary school in Oxon Hill, MD, either within the classroom (push-in services) or outside of the classroom (pull-out services). Tutors must be flexible and comfortable with both settings.
Two positions are available:
- Full-time: Monday through Friday, September 8, 2026 – April 30, 2027
- Part-time: Tuesday through Thursday, September 8, 2026 – June 9, 2027
Daily schedule: 7:30 AM – 1:40 PM. Tutors are responsible for taking daily attendance and monitoring student progress using a personal mobile device.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution (applications with anticipated graduation dates will not be considered)
- At least one year of teaching or tutoring experience in a school or other educational setting
- Mastery of K–5 ELA concepts and skills
- Understanding of challenges faced by urban students, schools, and communities, including racial, socio-economic, and cultural disparities
- Passion and commitment to student success
- Excellent punctuality and adherence to schedules
- Strong communication skills
- Ability to commute to the designated location and navigate a school environment (walking through hallways, classrooms, and stairways)
Pay
$28.16 – $31.29 hourly
