Elementary Counselor - Adams Elementary

This is a temporary, licensed-professional contract position with a 1.0 FTE (full-time equivalent) and a 191-work-day calendar. Salary range is $56,258 to $105,238 with benefits, prorated according to FTE. The Corvallis School District participates in the Oregon Public Employee Retirement System (PERS and OPSRP), contributing 6% of salary to the Individual Account Program (IAP) upon eligibility.

About the Role

Provide primary guidance, prevention, counseling, and coordinated services to students in cooperation with parents, school staff, and community members. Must be TSPC certified with a School Counselor/Social Worker endorsement.

Responsibilities

  • Meet the standards of Competent and Ethical Performance as outlined in Oregon Administrative Rules (OAR 584-020-000 to 584-020-045).
  • Create and model a respectful learning environment.
  • Effectively work with and respond to people from diverse cultures or backgrounds.
  • Use current knowledge of cultural diversity issues to develop and conduct classroom guidance activities addressing personal safety, emotional awareness, social balance, drug and alcohol prevention, and developmental skills.
  • Assist staff with implementing classroom guidance activities.
  • Monitor students to ensure appropriate referrals or plans are made to improve educational progress and social/emotional balance.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of individual student plans (e.g., IEP, 504).
  • Work as part of the school team to fully implement Response to Intervention (RTI).
  • Collaborate with school personnel to meet diverse social, emotional, and academic needs of students.
  • Consult with teachers, students, and parents to identify and solve problems interfering with school progress.
  • Work with individuals and groups of students to improve decision-making and interpersonal relations skills.
  • Assist in transitions between elementary and middle school or middle school and high school.
  • Serve as a liaison between the school and community resources that benefit students, parents, and the school community.
  • Establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and parents/guardians regarding academic and behavioral progress.
  • Assist school staff and administration in implementing policies and rules governing student conduct, reinforce positive behavior support plans, and utilize proactive behavior management skills.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and confidential records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations.
  • Utilize technology related to job responsibilities.
  • Reflect on performance and accept supervisory feedback.
  • Pursue and evaluate professional growth.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings and district in-service meetings.
  • Participate in school-related activities outside the regular workday, in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement.

  • Meet district physical ability, health, and safety guidelines.

Qualifications

  • Valid Oregon teacher or personnel service license with counselor endorsement and appropriate grade-level authorization.
  • Understanding of human growth and development patterns, learning theory, and brain research.
  • Familiarity with age-appropriate guidance, counseling, and behavior management strategies reflecting current best practices.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to listen with empathy and understanding.
  • Knowledge of state and federal education laws and student/staff rights.
  • Ability to exhibit professionalism and effective human relations.
  • Ability to manage and supervise students effectively.
  • Ability to facilitate meetings and collaboration with staff and community.
  • Ability to travel among district facilities; if driving, must meet district driving standards.
  • Standard First Aid certification, or ability to obtain within two months of hire, may be required.

Physical Demands

  • Frequent or prolonged sitting.
  • Crouching to work with younger students.
  • Moderate to high noise levels.
  • Frequent and prolonged talking/listening in conversations and meetings.
  • Accurate perception of sound.
  • Handling and working with a variety of materials and objects.
  • Occasional lifting/carrying of objects weighing 15-25 pounds.
  • Possible exposure to bodily fluids due to student injury or illness.
  • Possible exposure to bodily harm due to student behaviors.

Work Environment

  • Primarily indoors in school buildings, with some outdoor instruction and supervision.
  • Close proximity to groups of children and adults.
  • Evening and/or extended work hours may be required.
  • May require traveling to multiple work sites.

Pay

$56,258 - $105,238 with benefits, prorated according to FTE.

Schedule

191 work days per year. Start date as soon as possible.
