Electronics Manufacturing Engineer
About the role
We're looking for an Electronics Manufacturing Engineer who lives at the intersection of design and production. You'll be the person who makes sure the boards our electrical engineers design can actually be built, reliably, at yield, at cost; whether they run on our in-house SMT line or get handed to a contract manufacturer. This role blends DFM (Design for Manufacturing) and process engineering: you'll review PCB layouts before release, catch issues early, and uphold standards that keep boards manufacturable. You'll also own the SMT/PCBA process—bring-up, process control, yield, and daily production—balancing hands-on work with constructive feedback to the design team.
Responsibilities
- DFM review of PCB designs: Review layouts, footprints, stack-ups, and fabrication/assembly packages before release, including controlled-impedance manufacturability. Provide clear, specific DFM/DFA and design-for-test (DFT) feedback to electrical engineers, resolving issues before build.
- DFM automation and checking: Run systematic, rule-based DFM/DFA checks using tools like Valor, CAM350, or Allegro DFM to ensure consistency. Maintain rule decks as processes or vendors evolve.
- Design for test (DFT): Partner with electrical engineering to integrate test coverage (test points, probe access, ICT/flying-probe/boundary-scan) into designs from the start.
- Manufacturing best practices: Own and enforce DFM standards (IPC-7351, IPC-2221, IPC-A-610) for component spacing, courtyards, panelization, fiducials, thermal relief, and land patterns. Document and update standards.
- Package quality and CM readiness: Ensure every output package (Gerbers, fab/assembly drawings, BOM, pick-and-place, stack-up) is complete, unambiguous, and manufacturable—whether built in-house or by a CM.
- SMT line and process ownership: Engineer the in-house SMT/PCBA process: stencil/paste, placement, reflow profiling, SPI/AOI, and rework. Drive process control, yield, and defect reduction.
- Board bring-up and test: Verify and debug boards using oscilloscopes, multimeters, and lab instruments. Run hardware team tests and define test procedures, including automated/functional test (ATE) as production scales.
- NPI and design-to-production handoff: Partner with electrical engineering through new product introduction (NPI), from prototypes to volume production, closing the loop between design intent and buildability.
- Engineering–production liaison: Translate design intent into build-ready instructions and feed yield/defect/test data back to design teams to tighten the design-floor loop.
- CM partnership: Interface with external contract manufacturers: qualify processes, resolve DFM findings, review first articles, and enforce quality standards.
- Continuous improvement: Root-cause solder/assembly defects (8D/5-Whys), reduce scrap/rework, and update DFM standards with lessons learned.
Qualifications
- Associate's or Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering Technology (EET), Electrical/Manufacturing Engineering, or related field (or equivalent hands-on experience).
- 4+ years in electronics/PCBA manufacturing engineering, with hands-on ownership of an SMT line (paste, placement, reflow, AOI, rework).
- Proven DFM/DFA expertise: reviewed PCB designs, provided actionable feedback to EEs, and improved shipped boards by catching issues pre-release.
- Fluency with IPC standards (IPC-A-610, IPC-7351, IPC-2221, J-STD-001) and ability to hold design reviews to them.
- Ability to read schematics, layouts, fab/assembly drawings, BOMs, and stack-ups; spot errors in release packages.
- Hands-on SMT process command: reflow profiling, stencil/paste, placement, SPI/AOI, rework; diagnose defects like tombstoning, bridging, voiding, or head-in-pillow.
- Experience with DFM-check tools (Valor, CAM350, Allegro DFM) to run rule-based checks on layout/fab data.
- Design-for-test (DFT) fluency: design in test coverage (test points, ICT/flying-probe/boundary-scan) and review boards for testability.
- Hands-on electrical test/measurement: oscilloscopes, multimeters, bench instruments; define and run test procedures.
- Experience preparing/reviewing manufacturing output packages for internal lines or external CMs.
- Constructive, direct communication: can flag design issues, propose fixes, and drive resolution without friction.
Preferred Qualifications
- ECAD fluency (Altium, Cadence/Allegro, KiCad) to inspect footprints/layouts and mark up designs.
- Experience standing up/scaling an in-house SMT line or transitioning boards between internal and contract manufacturing.
- Depth with CAM/DFM tools (Valor, CAM350, Allegro DFM) and building/maintaining automated rule decks.
- Automated/functional test (ATE) experience (National Instruments/LabVIEW, Pico Technology).
- Background in robotics, automotive, aerospace, medical, or other high-reliability electronics.
- Lean/Six Sigma and SPC applied to SMT lines.
- Familiarity with ERP/MES and PLM systems.

Pay
The salary range for this role is $110,000 to $145,000, with compensation packages built to match seniority and skill level. Base salary is one part of the total compensation, which includes employee stock options for full-time employees.
