About the Role

San Diego Trolley, Inc. ("MTS") offers a 4-year apprenticeship program leading to a rewarding career working on the light rail system. The program provides paid training, competitive wages, exceptional benefits, career advancement opportunities, and tools and uniforms. Apprentices learn skills to progress as an Assistant Lineman, Lineman, and Electromechanic, responsible for the highly skilled repair and maintenance of the MTS Rail System.

Responsibilities

  • Maintenance and inspection of wayside railroad signal systems
  • Railroad grade crossings
  • Railroad track switches
  • Traction power generation and distribution
  • Operation of overhead bucket trucks and cranes
  • Various lighting systems
  • Ventilation systems
  • Pumps and pump controls

Program Structure

The Apprenticeship Program is divided into two main segments: Assistant Lineman and Lineman, each lasting approximately two years. The program combines on-the-job training with formal classroom training, which is conducted on the employee's own time. Training may include classes at San Diego City College or other approved local junior colleges, as well as formal classes held on MTS premises. MTS covers the cost of tuition and books. Apprentices work full-time while attending classes.

Upon completion of the Assistant Lineman Apprenticeship Program, the State of California awards a Journeyman's Certificate as an Assistant Lineman. The employee then enrolls in the Apprentice Lineman Program and receives a Journeyman's Certificate as a Lineman upon completion. After approximately six years from the hire date, the employee is eligible for promotion to Electromechanic.

Pay

  • Starting rate: $25.47 per hour
  • After six-month probationary period: $27.78 per hour, with eligibility for wage increases every six months thereafter
  • Top rate for Assistant Lineman: $34.81 per hour
  • Top rate for Lineman: $40.12 per hour
  • Top rate for Electromechanic: $46.33 per hour

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Passed Algebra in high school or college with a grade of C or better
  • Must pass an aptitude test following the interview
