About the role

This position performs installation, alteration, maintenance and repair of electrical wiring, apparatus, equipment, systems and related accessories throughout the Minnesota Zoo campus according to specifications in the national, state, and local electrical codes. The position may train and direct the work of laborers or other employees or helpers. This position supports operations across a large campus environment and requires the employee to travel between multiple buildings and work sites located throughout the campus to perform assigned duties and respond to operational needs.

Responsibilities

  • Install, maintain or repair all electrical distribution panels and related electrical equipment throughout the campus ensuring work orders are completed and equipment operates safely with maximum efficiency and reliability, downtime is minimized and all work meets electrical code requirements and NEC standards.
  • Provide maintenance to the facilities copper and fiber systems infrastructure including working on networking hardware and providing connectivity on systems such as the Energy Management system, SCADA system, Fire System and Data networks ensuring equipment operates safely with maximum efficiency and reliability, downtime is minimized and all work meets electrical code requirements and standards.
  • Implement the electrical equipment and systems preventive maintenance program ensuring buildings, structures, and their related electrical components are regularly inspected in accordance with established construction industry standards and city, state, and federal codes and downtime, energy and maintenance costs are minimized.
  • Keep current on, implement and enforce safety practices ensuring compliance with all OSHA requirements, rules and regulations.

Requirements

  • Current Minnesota Journeyman Electrician license.
  • Registration with the Minnesota State Board of Electricity as a Class A Journey or Master Electrician.
  • (Contractor's License does not meet the licensing requirement)
  • Current and valid Driver's License.

Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of electrical voltages, 480 – 277 – 208 – 120 - single phase and 3 phase.
  • Able to read blueprints and schematic wiring diagrams.
  • Able to troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, electronics, and malfunctions, with a strong knowledge of electrical parts and equipment.
  • Able to maintain electrical project records of time and materials and report daily, weekly, and monthly progress of projects.
  • Willingness to accept responsibility for professional growth.
  • Demonstrates an effort to improve cultural competence and actively takes steps to include diversity training as part of their professional development.

Physical Requirements

  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Able to climb stairs and ladders, squat, crouch, and stand and sit for extended periods of time
  • Able to work from elevated locations, including personal lifts and booms or scaffolding

  • Able to perform finger and hand coordination and repetitive motions with various types of equipment and tools on a regular basis
