Electrician I
About the role
The Electrician I (non-certified) assists other Electricians, and/or the Electric Shop Supervisor with installations and repairs. Duties include running conduit, pulling wire, mounting electrical boxes, connecting switches and receptacles, troubleshooting circuits, and performing maintenance tasks.
Responsibilities
- Assists with installations and repairs as directed
- Runs conduit, pulls wire, mounts electrical boxes, and connects switches and receptacles
- Troubleshoots existing circuits for problems and repairs
- Performs snow removal activities as assigned
- Installs, maintains, and enhances electrical systems and components
- Inspects, tests, and diagnoses issues with electrical systems and components
- Follows safety procedures and uses PPE while installing and servicing electrical equipment
- Constructs controllers and panels, secures brackets, pulls wires through conduit, and replaces faulty components
- Repairs motors, transformers, generators, and electronic controllers
- String transmission lines or cables through ducts or conduits
- Assists in the trim-out of electrical panels
- Cleans and maintains tools and performs routine maintenance on special equipment
- Maintains inventory of tools, equipment, and materials
- Performs preventative maintenance on tools and equipment
- Remains aware of job-specific safety protocols and corrects unsafe conditions
- Works effectively as part of a team
Requirements
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Available in case of school closings, delays, shutdowns, and emergencies
- Available to work scheduled and unscheduled hours as needed
- Reports to work at required times and performs assigned duties
- Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures of the Electrical field
- Knowledge of tools of the electrical trade
- Install, maintain, and enhance electrical systems and components
- Inspect, test, and diagnose issues with electrical systems and components
- Follows all relevant safety codes and guidelines while installing and servicing electrical equipment
- Understands electrical problems and their potential solutions
- Runs conduit, pulls and terminates wire
- Install fixture and device boxes
- Able to understand and follow instructions, work well with others, and present a positive attitude
- Detail-oriented, self-motivated, diligent, trustworthy, possesses strong organizational skills, and well-developed communication skills
- Able to lift up to 50+ pounds and perform duties in typical Virginia climate
- May use and operate aerial lifts or be willing to obtain certifications to work from various aerial lifts and heights
- Desire to work with a team to accomplish goals
- Urgency to grow and improve
Qualifications, Credentials, And Competencies
- High school diploma or GED
- Minimum of 1+ years of related experience required, or approximately 1-3 years of related experience in the electrical trade with an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Able to understand and follow instructions, and work under limited supervision
- Able to work well with the public and co-workers and present a positive attitude
- Clean and professional appearance
- Possess strong organizational skills and well-developed communication skills
- Valid Virginia driver's license, acceptable DMV record, and liability insurance required
- Able to work on weekends, holidays, and flexible daily/evening hours

Compensation is determined based on factors such as qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, along with University needs and external market conditions. Market benchmarks may be used, as appropriate, in combination with internal equity to ensure pay is fair and aligned with the broader compensation structure.
