Electrician

Salary range: $45.61 - $51.36 per hour. Offers are based on education, licensure, certifications, experience, and other business and organizational needs.

About the role

The Electrician performs journey-level work related to the repair, maintenance, service, installation, modification, troubleshooting, inspection, and monitoring of industrial electrical equipment, electrical systems, computerized lighting systems, and battery chargers. Performs planned and emergency maintenance on electrical and lighting control systems throughout Auxiliary Facilities.

Maintains industrial electrical equipment of various voltages up to and including 12,000 volts (12KV); performs troubleshooting on equipment such as generators, transformers, Medium Voltage (MV) and Low Voltage (LV) switchgear, breakers, batteries, DC systems, and Motor Control Centers (MCC) to identify and resolve electrical equipment problems.

Responsibilities

• Maintain clear and accurate documentation of all inspections, testing, and maintenance (corrective and/or preventative) performed.
• Update equipment documentation, specifications, and drawings as needed.
• Review and update all shop logs, both paper and electronic, according to updates and changes.
• Respond to emergency situations to mitigate and/or resolve immediate electrical concerns or safety issues, including after-hours emergencies.
• Review and create blueprints, drawings, and specifications for new construction and retrofit/renovation projects according to building code requirements.
• Perform all job duties in adherence with University and departmental safety guidelines.
• Maintain a positive attitude and communicate effectively with colleagues, supervisors, staff, faculty, and students.

Requirements

• 4 years of journey-level experience as an electrician and/or completion of a certified apprenticeship training; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Demonstrated experience in maintenance, repair, service, installation, modification, troubleshooting, inspection, and monitoring of commercial and residential electrical equipment and systems.
• Experience working in high-voltage environments greater than 600 volts, including transformers, switches, circuit breakers, recording instruments, and control systems.
• Experience and/or certification in forklift, lift, and/or boom truck operations.
• Demonstrated knowledge of safety regulations, including NFPA 70, NFPA 70E, Arc Flash, NEC, Uniform Building Code, and Industrial Safety Standards.
• Knowledge of electrical and electronic theory and technical practices for planning, layout, and repair of high-voltage equipment and lines.
• Skill in operating shop equipment and tools common to the skilled trade, including electrical test equipment (e.g., oscillators, rotation meters, digital test equipment, fault-finding equipment, amp meters, voltmeters, meggers).
• Ability to read and understand complex technical procedures, blueprints, plans, manuals, specifications, and diagrams.
• Ability to estimate time, methods, and materials needed from construction documents.
• Ability to communicate and work effectively with co-workers, supervisors, and the public while providing exceptional customer service.
• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and record information accurately.
• Current work authorization in the U.S. (sponsorship for employment visas is not available for this position).

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior experience prioritizing work orders, routine tasks, and emergency requests while selecting proper materials or equipment for safe and efficient completion.
• Experience working with a diverse student, staff, faculty, and visitor population.
• Basic knowledge and technical skills with computer programs and applications (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, Design Cad 2).
• Knowledge of UC/UCR policies and systems.
