About the role

Under direction, performs works on the installation, repair and maintenance of high or low tension electrical systems for light, heat, power and communications in or on buildings and structures; performs related work.

Responsibilities

  • Installs, repairs, replaces and maintains electric wiring systems and components, equipment and apparatus in or on buildings or structures in accordance with the New York City Electrical Code, pertinent plans, specifications and job orders.
  • Installs, repairs, replaces and maintains electric wiring and equipment and controllers.
  • Installs conduits, raceways and electrical conductors.
  • Conducts tests on existing installations to determine faults and makes necessary repairs.
  • When assigned to a position requiring a Special Electrician License, obtains permits for electrical work to be performed.
  • Conduct and/or witness tests on electrical wiring systems, equipment and/or appliances.
  • Maintains and tests backup generators on a regular basis.
  • Installs, repairs, replaces and maintains electrical line isolation panels in operating rooms and critical care areas of a health care facility.
  • Prepares applications, reports, notices and other documents.
  • Prepares required sketches, drawings and layouts.
  • Keeps job and other records.
  • In the temporary absence of the supervisor, may perform the duties of that position.
  • Supervises assigned personnel.
  • May drive motor vehicles.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Five (5) years of full-time experience as an electrician; or
  • Three (3) years of full-time experience as an electrician and sufficient full-time experience as an electrician’s helper or apprentice electrician or education in the electrical or electronic discipline acquired in an approved trade, technical school or vocational high school or college or university to make the equivalent of the remaining experience.

Undergraduate college credit can be substituted for experience on the basis of thirty (30) semester credits, from an accredited college or university, for one (1) year of experience. Six (6) months of acceptable experience will be credited for each year of helper or apprentice experience, or education in an approved trade or technical school or vocational high school in the electrical or electronic discipline. Less than a full year of helper or apprentice experience, or relevant education, will receive prorated credit.

License Requirements

  • For appointment to certain positions, candidates will be required to possess a Motor Vehicle Driver's License valid in the State of New York. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment.
  • Valid New York City Special Electrician License may be required for appointment to certain positions based on the operational needs of the facility.
  • Note: Valid New York City Master Electrician License is acceptable if you will convert the license to a Special Electrician License upon appointment. If required, this license must be maintained for the duration of employment.
