Responsibilities
- Plans layout, installs, and repairs wiring, electrical fixtures, apparatus, and control equipment
- Follows diagrams or blueprints, ensuring that concealed wiring is installed before completion of future walls, ceilings, and flooring
- Measures, cuts, bends, threads, assembles and installs electrical conduit
- Pulls wiring through conduit
- Splices wires by stripping insulation from terminal leads, twisting or soldering wires together, and applying tape or terminal caps
- Connects wiring to lighting fixtures and power equipment
- Installs control and distribution apparatus such as switches, relays, and circuit-breaker panels
- Connects power cables to equipment, such as electric range or motor, and installs grounding leads
- Tests continuity of circuit to ensure electrical compatibility and safety of components with testing instruments such as ohmmeter, battery and buzzer, and oscilloscope
- Observes functioning of installed equipment or system to detect hazards and need for adjustments, relocation, or replacement
- Repairs faulty equipment or systems
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent
- Enrolled in the ABC Apprenticeship Program
- In 1st year of apprenticeship
- Able to travel throughout Alaska to fill in on various construction projects as needed
- Valid Drivers License and acceptable driving record for the past three (3) years to be eligible under company vehicle insurance policy preferred
Physical Requirements
- Regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions
- Frequently exposed to wet or humid conditions; work near moving mechanical parts; work in high, precarious places; extreme cold; extreme heat and risk of electrical shock
- Occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of radiation and vibration
- Physical demands: Regularly lifts up to 50 pounds; stands; walks; climbs or balances; stoops, kneels, crouch, or crawl; uses hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms; sits; talks or hears; uses hands to operate tools and controls; uses feet to stand, walk, and perform tasks; uses eyes to see and use visual aids; uses vision to determine color, depth, and distance; uses vision to adjust focus
