About the role
The Electrician ‘A’ exercises independent judgment to plan and perform all work involved in the layout, installation, maintenance, and repair of a wide variety of low- and medium-voltage electrical equipment and systems across the University campus. Working from blueprints, schematics, and verbal instruction, the Electrician diagnoses faults, completes repairs to code, and supports both routine preventive maintenance and emergency response. The role operates with limited supervision and is expected to complete assignments safely, accurately, and in compliance with the National Electrical Code and all applicable University and regulatory standards.
Education and Experience
- An advanced knowledge of the electrical trade equivalent to complete accredited apprentice training
- At least three years additional practical experience
- A valid NY State Driver’s license and completed SU Driver’s safety training are both required

- Knowledgeable of the National Electrical Codes

Responsibilities
- Troubleshoot, diagnose problems and repair or replace component parts
- Repair or replace transformers, switchgear, power centers and associated control equipment, starters, motors, and power and lighting distribution systems, instruments and meters
- Run conduit and wiring for various installations
- Work from blueprints, schematic diagrams, determine material for jobs and order from distributor etc.
Physical Requirements
- Standing 60% – 100% of the shift
- Frequent bending at the waist; able to bend to below the knee (50% – 80%)
- Frequent stooping and/or crouching (50% – 80% of shift)
- Frequent twisting and bending of head, neck, and torso (75 – 95%)
- Full range of arm movement (extension, twisting, and bending of arm and shoulder, reaching overhead, etc.) (50% – 95%)
- Visual and cognitive capability sufficient to read and interpret blueprints; troubleshoot and diagnose problems and make repairs; maintain a NYS driver’s license
- Wrist and finger dexterity sufficient to use and operate a variety of hand tools, run wiring etc.
- May need to work on a ladder, scaffolds, bucket truck, or other elevated heights
- Able to drive vehicles with manual transmission
- Able to climb up into and down from truck cab
- May be required to work in tight spaces
- May be subject to extreme heat or cold
- Push/pull up to ___ lbs.

Tools/Equipment
- Use a variety of hand tools including hand tools, silica power tools and benders
- Work from ladders scaffolds, bucket truck, confined spaces including manholes
- The employee is required to provide their own hand tools including pliers, screwdrivers, wire cutters, channel locks, tape measures, etc.
