About the Role
This position offers broad hands-on responsibility and ownership of New Product Introduction (NPI) projects from proposal through qualification testing and production support. The incumbent will significantly influence the development of the product line’s power circuits and the advancement of the company’s Aerospace Components business in the marketplace.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop advanced electrical and power systems for aerospace applications, supporting product lines such as:
- Actuation Systems
- Turbo Generators
- Power Generation, Conversion, and Distribution
- Micro-Thrust Turbines
- Support engineering proposal and new business activities in a fast-paced aerospace environment, including:
- Review and assess customer and system-level requirements
- Develop derived and allocated technical requirements
- Prepare requirements compliance matrices
- Develop preliminary engineering models and supporting analyses
- Balance engineering rigor, technical risk, cost, and schedule requirements
- Support recurring and non-recurring cost estimates
- Contribute to project and program schedule development
- Develop system-level power performance models using MATLAB/Simulink or equivalent tools
- Translate system requirements into component and subsystem requirements
- Analyze system performance, operating conditions, and design trade-offs
- Design and develop power electronic hardware from concept through production, including:
- Component selection and qualification
- Schematic capture and circuit development
- Circuit simulation and analysis
- PCB/PCBA layout and design support
- Design verification and supporting engineering analyses
- Develop power electronics for:
- Motor control and drive systems
- Active rectification
- DC-DC power conversion
- Three-phase power systems
- Power generation and distribution
- Design and integrate sensors and feedback systems for closed-loop control applications, including:
- Resolvers
- VDTs
- Pressure sensors
- Current sensors
- Hall-effect devices
- Develop analog front-end circuitry and signal-conditioning solutions for various sensor interfaces
- Support the development, integration, and troubleshooting of firmware and software associated with power electronics and control systems
- Perform hands-on laboratory activities, including:
- System bring-up and commissioning
- Hardware and subsystem integration
- Electrical troubleshooting and debugging
- Performance testing and characterization
- Power generation system testing
- Design and develop test infrastructure for product verification and validation, including:
- Test stands
- Engineering fixtures
- Test equipment interfaces
- Test procedures and documentation
- Perform product verification and validation to ensure compliance with customer, system, and engineering requirements
- Investigate design and system-level failures and support root-cause investigations and corrective actions
- Prepare technical documentation and deliverables for internal and customer-facing activities, including:
- Engineering reports
- Technical presentations
- Analysis reports
- Test plans and procedures
- Verification and validation documentation
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related discipline from an accredited college or university
- Master’s degree in Engineering or a related technical field is preferred
- Approximately 5 years of relevant power electronics design and development experience; candidates with less experience but strong, directly applicable technical expertise are encouraged to apply
- U.S. citizenship is required due to the nature of the defense-related work
Skills
- Technical experience with:
- Motor control systems
- Electromechanical control systems
- Power conditioning and distribution systems, preferably 2 kW or greater
- Power electronic hardware design and development
- System integration, laboratory testing, and troubleshooting
- Firmware associated with power electronic systems
- Engineering and analysis experience with:
- Failure investigation and Root Cause and Corrective Action (RCCA)
- Reliability and safety assessments
- MTBF analysis
- Fault Tree Analysis (FTA)
- System-level modeling and simulation
- Requirements development and verification
- Aerospace industry experience:
- Familiarity with aerospace configuration management and engineering change control
- Experience working within an aerospace quality and manufacturing environment is preferred
- Familiarity with AS9100 standards is preferred
- Strong hands-on engineering and troubleshooting capabilities
- Ability to work effectively across hardware, software, firmware, and systems engineering disciplines
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, technically demanding aerospace environment
