Position Overview
The Electrical Engineer II role at Castillo Engineering is ideal for an experienced, customer-facing engineer who enjoys operating with significant independence and owning the creation and development of issue-for-construction (IFC) drawings and reports for utility-scale solar and battery storage projects. Junior engineers will be assigned to this role, with responsibility for training, task delegation, and supporting their day-to-day execution on projects. What You’ll Do
- Develop electrical designs for utility-scale solar projects, including single-line diagrams, layouts, schematics, and equipment specifications.
- Conduct system studies such as load flow analysis, fault current calculations, grounding studies, and arc flash analysis.
- Collaborate with project managers, civil engineers, and mechanical engineers to integrate electrical systems into overall project designs.
- Review and approve electrical drawings, calculations, and reports to ensure compliance with applicable codes (NEC, IEEE, NESC) and utility standards.
- Support procurement specifications for major equipment including inverters, transformers, switchgear, and medium-voltage cables.
- Prepare documentation for permitting and interconnection applications.
- Aid in commissioning plans and troubleshooting during project installation and start-up.
- Participate in site visits to verify design implementation and ensure quality control.
- Maintain knowledge of evolving industry standards, regulations, and technologies in solar energy.
What You Bring
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related field.
- 3–5 years of experience in solar PV design, preferably with utility-scale projects (>100MW).
- Proficient in electrical engineering software such as PVsyst, ETAP, AutoCAD, or equivalent.
- Strong understanding of utility interconnection processes and requirements.
- Familiarity with relevant codes and standards (NEC 690/705, IEEE 1547, NFPA 70E).
- Excellent interpersonal, teamwork, and communication skills.
- Ability to independently manage tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license is a strong plus.
- Experience with high-voltage substation design or integration for solar projects preferred.
- Knowledge of SCADA systems and instrumentation in PV plants preferred.
- Experience in renewable project permitting and regulatory compliance preferred.
- Familiarity with battery energy storage system (BESS) integration with solar PV preferred.
