About the role

This position involves designing and reviewing complex electrical engineering projects for In-house Design Bid Build (IHDBB), Architecture-Engineering (AE) Design Build (AEDB), and AE Design Bid Build (AEDBB) packages. The role includes consultation on design criteria, field investigations, and construction inspections.

Responsibilities

  • Design complex projects, including planning, design analysis, contract drawings, and specifications for IHDBB full design packages.
  • Review complex projects, including plans, design analysis, design details, contract drawings, and specifications produced by AE firms for AEDB or AEDBB projects.
  • Consult with other District or Branch sections regarding discrepancies or changes in design criteria and facility alterations.
  • Perform field trips to provide advice, consultation, investigation, and inspection of electrical aspects during construction and upon project completion.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, including a background investigation.
  • Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 15% of the time.
  • Must possess or obtain and maintain a valid/active government passport for foreign travel.
  • Appointment subject to a one-year probationary period unless previously met under 5 CFR Part 315.
  • U.S. citizenship is required.

Qualifications

To qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements below. Experience includes paid and unpaid work, such as volunteer experience through National Service programs or other organizations.

Basic Requirement for Electrical Engineer:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in engineering from a program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET); or
  • Degree including differential and integral calculus and advanced courses in five of the following seven areas: statics, dynamics; strength of materials; fluid mechanics; thermodynamics; electrical fields and circuits; properties of materials; or comparable fundamental engineering science/physics; or
  • Combination of education and experience demonstrating thorough knowledge of physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering and a good understanding of engineering sciences and techniques.

Demonstration of this background may include:

  • Professional registration or licensure (e.g., Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT), or Professional Engineer (PE)).
  • Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination or equivalent.
  • Completion of at least 60 semester hours in physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences.
  • Completion of a related curriculum (e.g., engineering technology, physics) with at least one year of professional engineering experience under supervision.

Specialized Experience:

  • One year of specialized experience at the GS-11 level or equivalent, including:
    • Preparing designs, plans, and specifications for electrical systems.
    • Reviewing electrical design drawings and specifications for compliance with project requirements.
    • Providing technical consultation on electrical engineering problems during design and construction.

Foreign education must be evaluated by a private organization specializing in foreign credential interpretation to be deemed equivalent to a U.S. accredited program.
