About the role

Performs as Electrical Engineer for electrical engineering related construction projects. Provides technical staff assistance, guidance, and surveillance on all electrical engineering aspects for Directorate of Public Works programs.

Responsibilities

• Prepares criteria, scopes of work, engineered designs, plans, specifications, and final construction cost estimates.
• Evaluates project data to ensure completed construction will provide a properly operating facility with minimal operational and maintenance costs.
• Verifies incorporation of proven design criteria.
• Prepares electrical engineering designs, plans, and specifications for construction projects.
• Develops construction cost estimates for electrical systems and scopes of work.
• Conducts facility electrical inspections.

Requirements

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
• Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 10% of the time.
• Requires a valid driver’s license.
• Must wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
• Work may involve confined spaces and hazardous materials.
• Work conditions include exposure to heat, cold, excessive humidity, dampness, or chilling weather, both indoors and outdoors.
• May work alone or closely with others.
• U.S. citizenship is required.

Qualifications

To qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work.

Basic Requirement for Electrical Engineer:

• Degree: Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in engineering from a program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET); OR
• Degree with differential and integral calculus plus courses in five of the following seven areas:
  • statics, dynamics;
  • strength of materials (stress-strain relationships);
  • fluid mechanics, hydraulics;
  • thermodynamics;
  • electrical fields and circuits;
  • nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); or
  • any comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics (e.g., optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics).
• Combination of Education and Experience: College-level education, training, and/or technical experience that demonstrates:
  • thorough knowledge of physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering, and
  • a good understanding of engineering sciences and techniques and their applications.
  The adequacy of such background must be demonstrated by one of the following:
  • Professional registration or licensure (e.g., Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT), or Professional Engineer (PE)).
  • Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination or equivalent.
  • At least 60 semester hours of courses in physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences as specified above.
  • Completion of a related curriculum (e.g., engineering technology, physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology) with at least 1 year of professional engineering experience under supervision.

Specialized Experience for GS-12:

One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level, including:

• Preparing electrical engineering designs, plans, and specifications for construction projects.
• Developing construction cost estimates for electrical systems.
• Developing scopes of work for electrical systems.
• Conducting facility electrical inspections.

Foreign Education:

If using foreign education to qualify, credentials must be evaluated by a private organization specializing in foreign education equivalency. Education must be deemed equivalent to a U.S. accredited program.
