About the role

This role is ideal for a degreed Electrical Engineer with an EIT and at least five years of experience in power systems engineering. You will provide engineering support for a large campus facility, partnering closely with the tenured electrical engineer on site to analyze, evaluate, and enhance medium-voltage electrical infrastructure, including 13.8kV distribution systems, substations, switchgear, protective relaying systems, transformers, and associated power distribution equipment. The position focuses on design review, planned system improvements, and rapid-response troubleshooting to ensure safe, reliable, and resilient plant operations over the long term.

This is a Contract to Hire position based in Rosedale, MD, requiring on-site work five days per week in a large campus plant environment. The role supports a long-term, multi-year contract with a major engineering organization, offering exposure to complex medium-voltage systems and a highly technical operations setting.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with the tenured electrical engineer to run analysis, evaluation, reliability, and expansion studies on medium-voltage electrical infrastructure, including 13.8kV distribution systems, substations, switchgear, protective relaying systems, transformers, and power distribution equipment.
  • Perform comprehensive electrical system assessments, field investigations, and documentation reviews, including one-line diagrams, protection coordination studies, arc flash analyses, and equipment evaluations.
  • Conduct load flow, capacity, and infrastructure analyses to evaluate system performance and identify operational constraints related to current and future load demands.
  • Evaluate short-circuit conditions, protective device coordination, and equipment ratings to maintain safe and reliable electrical operations.
  • Assess system reliability and resiliency, identify single points of failure, and develop recommendations to improve operational continuity.
  • Support maintenance planning through equipment condition assessments, lifecycle evaluations, replacement planning, and asset management recommendations.
  • Investigate power quality concerns, including harmonics, voltage fluctuations, motor starting impacts, and system disturbances, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Provide engineering support for plant expansions, equipment upgrades, and system modifications, including evaluating impacts on existing electrical infrastructure.
  • Respond to electrical outages, equipment failures, and abnormal operating events through troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and development of corrective action recommendations.
  • Develop and maintain electrical system models and perform engineering studies that support maintenance, operations, and risk mitigation decisions.
  • Prepare clear technical reports, engineering recommendations, and presentations for operations, maintenance, and management teams.
  • Collaborate closely with operations, maintenance, facility engineering, and university stakeholders to align electrical engineering solutions with campus needs.
  • Provide both remote and on-site engineering support as required by operational priorities and plant conditions.
  • Review and support planned system improvements while also contributing to rapid-response troubleshooting efforts to ensure safe and resilient plant operations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification.
  • 5+ years of experience in power systems engineering, electrical distribution, or utility infrastructure.
  • Experience with medium-voltage power distribution systems, such as 13.8kV distribution networks.
  • Strong understanding of substations, transformers, switchgear, protective relaying, and electrical distribution equipment.
  • Hands-on experience performing load flow studies, short-circuit studies, protection coordination analyses, arc flash analyses, and power quality assessments.
  • Familiarity with applicable IEEE, NFPA 70E, NEC, and NESC standards and their practical application in plant and campus environments.
  • Proficiency with power system modeling software such as ETAP, SKM, EasyPower, or equivalent tools.
  • Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills for diagnosing complex electrical issues and developing effective solutions.
  • Strong technical writing skills for preparing detailed reports, recommendations, and presentations.
  • Ability to support urgent operational issues and effectively prioritize multiple assignments in a dynamic environment.

Additional Qualifications

  • Experience working within large campus or plant environments with complex electrical infrastructure.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with operations, maintenance, facility engineering, and external stakeholders.
  • Experience supporting plant expansions, equipment upgrades, and system modifications.
  • Experience in asset management, lifecycle evaluations, and replacement planning for electrical equipment.
  • Experience responding to electrical outages and abnormal operating events, including root cause analysis and corrective action planning.
