Electrical Engineer 3 - Nuclear
About the Role
This onsite field support position at Surry Nuclear Power Plant offers the opportunity to work in a project team environment with engineers and designers involved in the design, modification, and analysis of new and existing power plant electrical systems. Under the direction of the electrical engineering lead or project manager, you will tackle challenging assignments, including investigating, troubleshooting, and solving a wide variety of electrical engineering issues.
Responsibilities
- Assist the electrical engineering lead or project manager in ensuring projects are completed satisfactorily, on time, and within budget.
- Prepare and review detailed calculations, including three-phase AC and DC power studies, short circuit, voltage drop, motor starting, and protective relay settings.
- Prepare engineering documentation for design input for drawing production.
- Prepare and review engineering reports and studies that present technical information clearly and concisely, meeting client requirements and Sargent & Lundy formats.
- Perform independent reviews of work performed by others, including calculations and drawing preparation.
- Develop project work plans.
- Serve as a liaison between the firm and clients in a support or lead engineering role.
- Apply modern tools such as automation and AI to solve engineering problems, improve workflows, reduce rework, and deliver cost-effective designs.
- Use data and tools (e.g., Python, MATLAB, advanced Excel) to automate calculations, design checks, reporting, or data transformation.
Requirements
- A BS in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited engineering program is required.
- 3 or more years of experience in the design of electrical engineering systems in a project team environment, with a focus on integrated, detailed system design for new plants or modifications/replacements for existing plants.
- Experience must include the selection of equipment, materials, control philosophy, and the preparation and assembling of calculations and specifications.
- Experience with electrical system design, including medium and low voltage distribution systems (transformers, generators, motors), equipment selection, and analytical calculations.
- Effective critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively in teams and independently.
- Detail-oriented approach to work.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering (MSEE).
- Construction and start-up experience.
- Programming or scripting skills (e.g., Python, MATLAB, advanced Excel) for automation.
- Additional learning in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, or related fields.

Pay
Compensation range: $74,353 - $113,595. The total compensation package includes a base salary, comprehensive benefits, and eligibility for a yearly discretionary bonus.
