Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Advanced Engineering Technologies (AET) Group within the Nuclear Nonproliferation Division (NND) is seeking an on-site electrical CAD drafter/designer to support research and development projects. The AET group specializes in engineering principles for nuclear fuel cycle processes and collaborates across ORNL to meet sponsor needs.

About the role

The position involves electrical and mechanical design in an R&D environment, including creating one-line diagrams, P&IDs, 3D models from conceptual designs, and updating legacy prints. You will also participate in large design reviews and coordinate with fabrication shops to improve manufacturability.

Responsibilities

  • Develop complex 3D models, 2D fabrication prints, P&IDs, electrical one-line diagrams, schematics, and wire diagrams.
  • Coordinate with fabrication shops to enhance manufacturability of designs.
  • Contribute to engineering deliverables such as drawings, reports, specifications, and studies.
  • Apply and document understanding of codes and standard practices.
  • Document work through work instructions, drawings, and models.
  • Align behaviors and priorities with ORNL’s core values: Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in electrical, systems, process, or mechanical engineering technology with a minimum of five (5) years of related experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Experience with solid modeling and design software packages.
  • Experience in machine design, fabrication, or tooling design.
  • Experience in an R&D and/or testing environment.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD software suite (Electrical, Plant 3D, etc.).
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Q clearance from the Department of Energy (pre-employment and ongoing drug testing required).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in design and process teams, process development, and control.
  • Experience maintaining high levels of process documentation and quality assurance.
  • Proficiency with Autodesk Inventor and Autodesk Vault Professional.
  • Active DOE-Q or TS/SCI clearance.
