Electrical Design Engineer, Power Generation Systems – Alabama
This posting serves to fill multiple Engineer positions in the Electrical Design Department at the following location: Birmingham, AL – The Energy Center.
Work Location, Schedule, & Travel
- Positions will be based in Birmingham, AL, but candidates living outside this area may be considered with the expectation of successful telework and routine in-office or field presence.
- Hybrid work schedule: four (4) days in-office and one (1) day telecommute (subject to adjustment).
- Relocation assistance may be provided if the successful candidate does not live within a reasonable commute distance.
- Travel required: up to 25% (day and overnight), with the ability to work in remote/virtual and industrial/plant environments.
Job Summary
These positions are responsible for leading and executing detailed design activities on electrical power systems at power generating facilities across the Southern Company fleet. Responsibilities include quality assurance, governance, cost control, schedule adherence, project development, scope definition, guidance documents, adherence to standards, best practice reviews, and project closeout. The role involves producing engineering drawings, specifications, and material requirements to facilitate construction, operation, and maintenance of electrical power systems, with an emphasis on safety, quality, scheduling, and costs. The position also provides technical direction and Quality Assurance reviews for detailed design activities.
Responsibilities
- Develop electrical design documents for power generation facilities.
- Assist in the evaluation and purchase of electrical equipment.
- Review vendor design documents to ensure conformance to design requirements.
- Coordinate work with other disciplines, clients, suppliers, and contractors.
- Provide on-site support during construction, startup, and checkout.
- Develop scope definition documents, estimates, and provide schedule inputs.
- Prepare material take-offs for cost estimates and material procurement.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science Degree (BS) in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution/program is required.
- Advanced degree in a related field is a plus.
- Professional Registration desired but not required.
Qualifications
- Electrical system design and/or engineering experience, preferably within heavy industrial facilities or new construction projects.
- Experience completing technical assignments with limited instructions from supervision.
- Experience with scope development, schedule input, material takeoffs, and fabrication drawing review.
- Experience developing electrical power system design including single line, elementary, and wiring diagrams.
- 3D modeling experience or ability to learn 3D software preferred.
- Knowledge of electrical design codes and standards.
- Proficiency in AutoDesk Suite and Microsoft Office products.
