What To Expect Tesla is seeking an innovative Electrical Design Engineer with strong expertise in electrical building systems and infrastructure to join our dynamic North America Infrastructure team in Los Angeles. This role emphasizes forward-thinking electrical design, cross-functional collaboration, and hands-on implementation.

About the Role

You will be responsible for delivering scalable, code-compliant, and constructable solutions that support Tesla’s fast-paced R&D for Autopilot, Energy, Vehicle, Solar, AI, Optimus, and Cell Manufacturing where no week looks the same. You will help design and deploy mechanical systems that directly enable innovation while advancing Tesla’s mission to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development of electrical designs, including power distribution, grounding, lighting, and controls for manufacturing equipment, building infrastructure, battery/energy storage, EV charging, and R&D test setups
  • Prepare and oversee IFC (Issued for Construction) and IFP (Issued for Permit) drawing packages using Revit, ensuring compliance with NEC, California Building Code (CBC), and Title 24
  • Perform and direct critical electrical studies including arc flash hazard assessments, fault current analyses, voltage drop calculations, selective coordination, transient analyses, and harmonic studies using ETAP, SKM, or equivalent software
  • Drive innovative, first-principles electrical design solutions that balance technical excellence with constructability, cost-effectiveness, and Tesla's sustainability objectives
  • Establish and track team KPIs, prepare impact reports, and deliver executive-level status updates on electrical progress for critical programs
  • Prioritize and allocate team resources across a high volume of concurrent projects—ranging from rapid-turnaround equipment installs to multi-quarter facility buildouts—ensuring balanced workloads and on-time delivery
  • Partner with stakeholders across all Tesla product verticals to refine project scopes, validate feasibility, and optimize designs for sustainability, efficiency, and cost
  • Interface with external EPC firms, vendors, and contractors during bidding, procurement, and construction phases to enforce compliance and mitigate risks
  • Present design concepts, progress updates, and risk assessments during project milestone reviews to multi-discipline teams and leadership
  • Interface and collaborate with engineers from multiple disciplines and construction trades and perform regular field walks to review installation progress and design adherence

  • Proficiency in Revit MEP, including advanced modeling, BIM coordination, panel scheduling, and circuiting
  • Proficiency in electrical analysis software (ETAP, SKM, or equivalent) for fault current, arc flash, transient, harmonic, and coordination studies
  • In-depth knowledge of NEC, California Building Code (CBC), California Energy Code (Title 24), and NFPA standards
  • Strong ability to manage multiple concurrent projects across varying scales and timelines in a high-velocity environment
  • Construction administration experience including site observation visits and review of RFIs, Submittals, and Shop Drawings and familiarity with OSHAWillingness to travel to support infrastructure development in California and throughout North America (travel up to 33%)
