Electrical Design Engineer, HV/MV Engineering
About the role
Amazon Web Services Infrastructure Services is seeking an Electrical Engineer to join a global engineering team responsible for the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. This role supports AWS data centers and the critical equipment—servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling—that ensures customers have continual access to cloud innovation. You’ll collaborate with diverse teams, including software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, and operations managers, to maintain high standards for safety, security, and cost efficiency.
As a substation engineer, you’ll take designs from concept to permit and construction documents, define equipment specifications, approve submittals, and support construction from site selection through commissioning. You’ll serve as a subject matter expert in electrical engineering, designing resilient, cost-effective electrical distribution systems to achieve world-class uptime for AWS customers. This role offers the opportunity to drive change, define systems, and work on multi-million-dollar projects supporting a wide variety of businesses and customers.
This position is based in Herndon, VA, Austin, TX, Seattle, WA, or Columbus, OH. Travel is required, including up to 25% domestic travel to data centers, team off-sites, and vendor factory visits. International support and occasional international travel may also be necessary.
Responsibilities
- Participate in site selection reviews for AWS data centers.
- Design substation electrical systems and collaborate with other disciplines to create construction document sets.
- Develop designs that meet quality and budgetary requirements.
- Work with local utilities to define site utility requirements.
- Review and approve equipment submittals.
- Define project scope and provide technical support during construction phases.
- Work with commissioning teams to test and validate installation, operation, and performance of electrical systems.
- Manage concurrent projects across multiple geographical regions.
- Travel to sites for reviews, work with field engineers, and conduct engineering evaluations, audits, and startup activities.
- Propose creative, out-of-the-box solutions to complex engineering challenges.
- Support international teams, including developing schematic and design document packages (understanding of international electrical design requirements is helpful).
Requirements
- 4+ years of industrial or commercial engineering experience in mission-critical facilities, such as data centers, power generation, or oil and gas.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).
- Experience researching new designs, technologies, and construction methods for data center equipment and facilities.
- Ability to work within a team and collaborate with internal and external groups, including utilities, manufacturers, vendors, and contractors.
- Willingness to travel up to 25% domestically and occasionally internationally.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (PE) License.
- Experience with regional building codes and regulations.
- Experience carrying design concepts through exploration, development, and deployment or mass production.
- Experience reading, interpreting, and creating construction drawings, specifications, and submittal documents.
- 4+ years of experience in HV/MV substation design.

Pay
The base salary range for this position is $116,800 – $160,000 USD annually, depending on location (Herndon, VA; Austin, TX; Seattle, WA; or Columbus, OH). The total compensation package includes sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation is determined based on experience, qualifications, and location.
