About the Role

As a Switchgear Design Engineer, you will design and engineer UL 891 low-voltage switchgear systems, focusing on busbar systems, control schemes, and integrated electrical/mechanical assemblies. This role combines electrical power system design with manufacturability and production optimization to deliver safe, compliant, and cost-effective products.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and validate busbar designs (ampacity, short-circuit withstand, thermal and mechanical performance).
  • Create control schematics and interlocking logic.
  • Ensure compliance with NEC, UL, ANSI, and IEEE standards.
  • Perform electrical analyses such as short-circuit and load evaluations.
  • Support equipment selection and protection schemes.
  • Generate detailed engineering deliverables including single-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, layouts, and bills of materials.
  • Analyze and improve manufacturing processes, workflow, equipment layout, and space utilization to enhance efficiency and product quality for integrated electrical and mechanical systems.
  • Collaborate with fabrication teams on sheet metal design, enclosure integration, and assembly processes.
  • Own multiple concurrent projects, balancing technical design, production schedules, and cost considerations.
  • Interface with cross-functional teams, stakeholders, and suppliers to resolve technical issues, support production, and ensure successful project execution.
  • Engineer busbar layouts and configurations (copper/aluminum) to meet thermal, mechanical, and dielectric performance criteria.
  • Create and implement control logic and interlocking schemes for breaker operation, protection, and safety.
  • Select and specify circuit breakers, CTs/PTs, protective relays, and control components based on application requirements.
  • Configure and apply protective relay settings and develop coordination studies using tools such as ETAP or SKM.
  • Produce bill of materials (BOMs), technical specifications, and customer submittal packages.
  • Support Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), verifying functionality and resolving issues.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, manufacturing, and field teams to optimize design for constructability and performance.
  • Review vendor drawings and documentation to ensure technical accuracy and compliance with project specifications.
  • Incorporate arc flash mitigation, grounding, and bonding practices into system designs.
  • Manage engineering changes, RFIs, and project deliverables to meet schedule and budget requirements.
  • Provide technical support during commissioning and troubleshooting of installed switchgear systems.

Requirements

  • BSEE or other related technical degree required.
  • Minimum 3-5 years’ work experience in production engineering.
  • Designed low-voltage switchgear bus systems, including sizing, spacing, and bracing based on ampacity and short-circuit requirements.
  • Performed short-circuit, load flow, and voltage drop calculations to validate equipment ratings and system reliability.
  • Developed single-line diagrams, control schematics, and wiring diagrams for switchgear and control panels.
  • Experience in ISO9001:2015 and ERP operating environment.

Skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills for developing and functioning in a team environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Software (Word, Excel, Project, etc.).
