About the Role

The Electrical Controls Technician contributes to the success of the Joplin Mineral Wool Plant by providing mechanical and electrical support for the entire manufacturing operation. This role involves performing preventative, predictive, and corrective maintenance in a team-based, self-managed environment with high levels of interaction to solve problems and maintain production systems.

Responsibilities

  • Live the Owens Corning Safety Stand: Ensure a safe and environmentally compliant workplace where safety is the first priority.
  • Adhere to all plant safety practices, codes, procedures, and programs.
  • Work from a planned work order process and reactively address maintenance needs.
  • Complete records, reports, job summaries, and update CMMS; handle SAP duties.
  • Assist in developing and completing PM and predictive maintenance programs for motors, panels, and electrical components/systems.
  • Update drawings or documentation as required.
  • Troubleshoot, install, and commission variable frequency drives (DC and AC), motion control drives, and robotics.
  • Perform combustion system maintenance, troubleshooting, and tuning.
  • Install, maintain, and troubleshoot power distribution systems, branch circuits, lighting systems, transformers, and wiring.
  • Install, maintain, and troubleshoot relay logic, ladder diagrams, control components (photo eyes, motor starters, relays, limit switches, proximity sensors, timers, solenoids, servo drives, frequency inverters, linear drives, tachs, and encoders).
  • Troubleshoot PLC programs, ladder logic, components (CPU backplanes, I/O boards, counters, modules), and communication modules (Ethernet).
  • Program local HMIs to improve performance, upgrades, and operator efficiency.
  • Troubleshoot, install, and commission pneumatics, hydraulics, and mechanical systems.
  • Enhance maintenance processes through equipment and systems analysis to identify opportunities for modification, replacement, or new technology.
  • Provide electrical, controls, and automation support for automation projects, plant processes, packaging, and utility operations.
  • Actively participate in safety, communication, continuous improvement, and housekeeping programs.
  • Apply basic industrial electrical code and understand local compliance issues.
  • Read schematics and P&ID drawings.
  • Determine fusing, thermal overload protection, wire sizing, and motor specifications.
  • Comply with OSHA electrical safety standards, including Arc Flash, tools, and safety procedures.
  • Perform root cause analysis, including trend analysis, machine deterioration analysis, and condition-based monitoring.
  • Participate in work teams and committees to improve plant performance.
  • Participate in formal and informal training programs to teach operating and troubleshooting techniques.
  • Engage in talent development, training, and foster an open, trusting environment.

Requirements

  • A minimum of 5 years of industrial maintenance experience, training, and/or education.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Eligible to work in the U.S. on a permanent basis.
  • Ability to work 12-hour shifts.
  • Must pass a physical and drug screen.
  • Must complete a background check.
  • Must pass a performance test.

Skills

  • Strong working knowledge of Allen Bradley process control hardware (PLC5, SLC 500, ControlLogix, CompactLogix).
  • Expertise in PLC I/O Modules (Point I/O, Flex I/O) and PLC I/O buses (Profibus, Fieldbus, DeviceNet, ControlNet).
  • Expertise in Allen Bradley Variable Frequency Drives and Motion Control.
  • Expertise in sensors and sensor software (level, pressure, temperature, proximity switches, encoders, pH, vision, position indication).
  • Knowledge of motors, breakers, and power distribution (12kV and below).
  • Familiarity with electrical codes (NFPA 70, NFPA 86, NEC).
