Electrical Control Engineer

Petersen is seeking a Controls Engineer to design, develop, manufacture, install, and test control systems and the associated engineering documentation.

About the role

You will collaborate with Group Leaders and Project Managers to track and manage budgets and schedules, provide technical direction to manufacturing and purchasing departments, and interface with project team members and customer contacts.

Responsibilities

• Assume technical responsibility for all assigned elements of controls system design.
• Interface with the project team to ensure optimum and proper system application.
• Deliver accurate and timely documentation that meets applicable codes, standards, and customer requirements.
• Prepare design support documentation, conduct performance and control system design calculations, and maintain concise engineering records.
• Define sub-system design specifications, software requirements, and interface control specifications that meet customer requirements from the system level specification.
• Provide stand-alone control system specifications for subcontracts reflecting customer requirements.
• Interface with customer and project team members in a timely and professional manner to meet internal and external expectations.
• Work closely with production to ensure proper application and integration of all mechanical system components.
• Establish complete interface of control systems with customer facilities and negotiate connection details with customer staff.
• Define robust conceptual and detail control system designs and supporting performance predictions and models to satisfy customer requirements.
• Assume responsibility for adherence to budget and schedule for assigned project elements.
• Collaborate with group leaders, project managers, and project team members to ensure adherence to budget and schedule, promptly notifying management of any deviations.
• Develop technical specifications for competitive bidding on key controls system components.
• Communicate with suppliers to ensure appropriate technical application and capability of components and subsystems.
• Provide technical support and direction to purchasing agents during the purchase process.
• Participate in scope definition for subcontractor efforts and provide field oversight to verify successful completion of tasks.
• Provide technical concepts and cost estimates to support sales and marketing efforts.
• Support customer needs in a timely and professional manner, demonstrating an appropriate sense of urgency and understanding of customer service.
• Support Petersen’s corporate image, initiatives, and business plans through positive interaction with the management team.
• Perform work in compliance with product, Quality System, and Employee Manual requirements, ensuring safety of personnel, the public, and the environment.
• Participate in corrective and preventive actions, initiate requests for nonconforming material review, and stop work that violates compliance until resolved.

Requirements

• 3–5 years of experience in control system design and development.
• Willingness to support multi-million dollar control system projects from design through field installation and commissioning.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to organize and conduct several tasks concurrently.
• Computer literacy and proficiency using Microsoft Office and Microsoft Project software programs (E-plan experience is a plus).
• Self-motivated, creative vision, and ability to work in a team environment.
• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related discipline (mechanical, electrical, hydraulics, power systems, etc.).

• Sit for extended periods at a desk or in meetings; normal hearing and visual acuity; manual dexterity to operate keyboard and calculator.
• Frequent lifting and carrying up to 5 pounds, with occasional lifting up to 20 pounds.

• Frequent travel between facilities, exposure to outdoor and indoor environmental extremes, noisy manufacturing shop environments, and typical office environments.
• May be required to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods.

• General office equipment (computers, software, copy machine, fax machine, etc.).
• Facility-related test equipment (DVOM, light and sound meters, Dranetz meter, data loggers, anemometers, etc.).

Availability & Travel

• Maintain regular and acceptable attendance as determined by the employer.
• Available and willing to work overtime as necessary.
• Available and willing to travel as necessary to meet business needs.
