Electrical and Instrumentation Engineer IV

About the Role

This position is responsible for performing all aspects of complex electrical and instrumentation engineering assignments. It requires extensive progressive experience and involves applying advanced engineering techniques and analysis, working under general supervision.

Responsibilities

• Familiarity with and utilization of department design and drafting standards.
• Understanding of project scope, specifications, and design criteria upon assignment to a project task team.
• Recognition and communication of scope and design changes promptly.
• On-site assistance during startup.
• Providing technical guidance to less experienced drafting and engineering personnel.
• Coordinating work activities with other staff members and the discipline lead.
• Acting as discipline lead on small to mid-sized projects.
• Producing estimate-level designs and material take-offs suitable for the project’s estimate level.
• Producing detailed design calculations and sketches for materials of construction, organized for efficient checking and use by drafters/designers.
• Developing 15kV/5kV equipment specifications and electrical installation specifications.
• Creating conceptual layouts and cost studies to determine efficient engineering solutions.
• Producing installation details, motor control center single lines, electric room layouts, motor control elementaries, connection diagrams, cable schedules, control panel layouts, and grounding, lighting, power, and instrumentation plans under general supervision.
• Checking calculations made by other engineers for accuracy, code conformance, and good engineering practice.
• Assisting the drafting group in resolving routine layout and detailing problems, providing sketches and details for engineering drawings.
• Consulting with design leaders from other disciplines to ensure smooth information flow for project completion.
• Advising senior engineers on design or scope changes.
• Assisting in developing and assembling scopes, drawings, and specifications for electrical/instrumentation purchase inquiries.
• Reviewing and checking vendor drawings and other discipline drawings for electrical/instrumentation input.
• Developing construction specifications and reviewing fabrication drawings for conformance to engineering specifications.
• Performing fieldwork to gather data, check tie-ins, and provide construction support.
• Applying advanced engineering techniques to complex designs.
• Estimating and scheduling professional service hours and assessing progress and quality of electrical/instrumentation work.
• Identifying and developing work-sharing packages for interoffice execution support.
• Providing leadership to ensure communication and execution of work within scope, schedule, and budget.

Requirements

• Bachelor or Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university (required).
• Professional Engineering registration (highly preferred).
• 6+ years of relevant industrial experience in electrical and instrumentation engineering.

Skills

• Knowledge and application of the current National Electrical Code (NEC).
• Ability to perform lighting level calculations, size wire, conduit, and overcurrent protection for lighting and power applications.
• Ability to perform voltage drop calculations and route conduit and cable tray.
• Ability to calculate tray and conduit fill and determine motor control center loading.
• Familiarity with specifications and installation details of construction bulk materials and equipment.
• Ability to create accurate electrical installation documents from vendor equipment drawings.
• Ability to determine load center unit substation loading and develop equipment specifications (e.g., motor control centers, variable frequency drives, motors, load center unit substations).
• Knowledge of schedule constraints and information requirements for electrical deliverables.
• Ability to produce 15kV power system single line diagrams and familiarity with 15kV power system equipment and installation techniques.
• Ability to develop equipment specifications for 15kV/5kV equipment and perform calculations for short circuit and overcurrent protective device ratings.
• Ability to develop electrical installation specifications and accurately estimate task completion.
• Ability to develop construction cost estimates, detailed engineering schedules, and man-hour budgets for projects.
• Ability to determine construction material quantities and contribute to P&ID development for measurement and control.
• Ability to develop control narratives and specify process instrumentation and installation details.
• Ability to size control valves using appropriate software and develop specifications/data sheets for instrumentation, analyzers, control systems, and actuated valves.
• Knowledge of instrumentation and controls standards (ISA) and ability to act as discipline engineer of record for projects requiring professional engineering certification.
• Knowledge and application of company engineering design and CAD drafting standards.
• Programming experience with PLC, HMI, and/or DCS equipment.
• Ability to lead small teams and deliver on commitments.
• Working knowledge of CAD software (AutoCAD, Microstation, or both).
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, along with strong presentation skills.
• Ability to develop virtual team skills and cross-divisional relationships, providing interoffice execution leadership and support.
