About the role

The English Learner Specialist oversees and provides support for the English Learner Program. This includes engaging in all AZELLA Trainings, providing professional development for teachers with EL students, collaborating with the School Testing Coordinator to create and implement schedules for English language instruction, and serving students during their English language development time.

Responsibilities

  • Engage in all AZELLA Trainings pertaining to testing, test interpretation, differentiated instruction, professional development for teachers, etc.
  • Provide professional development for teachers with EL students.
  • Work with the School Testing Coordinator (STC) to create and implement a schedule to pull out students for English language instruction.
  • Service students during their English language development time.
  • Provide EL tutoring before or after school.
  • Track student English acquisition progress.
  • Support students who require English acquisition instruction.
  • Show deep and broad understanding of research-based language interventions.
  • Show solid knowledge of the K-8 standards.
  • Show expertise in using and helping others use effective instructional and assessment practices.
  • Show collaborative skills necessary to influence and support educational efforts.
  • Afford collaborative skills necessary to influence and support educational efforts.
  • Assist administrators, teachers, and school staff in implementing and monitoring a comprehensive EL program.
  • Collect and maintain appropriate records of student progress.
  • Provide timely and accurate oral and written feedback to teachers, school staff, students, and parents.
  • Use a variety of data to evaluate the abilities and disabilities of students.
  • Adjust instruction to meet the needs of EL students.
  • Serve as a member of the school data team to design, implement, and monitor the school EL plan.
  • Create a classroom environment conducive to positive, effective instruction.
  • Facilitate instruction based on current research-based best practices in English acquisition.
  • Use district and state assessment data to improve instruction.
  • Provide individual diagnostic testing to assess student needs.
  • Participate in team reviews concerning the academic progress of at-risk students (MTSS).
  • Attend scheduled meetings and parent conferences as needed.
  • Communicate objectives to students in a well-planned, organized manner using clear and precise language.
  • Communicate concerns and ideas with colleagues, students, parents, and the community in a positive, professional, and ethical manner.
  • Assume individual responsibilities that may be assigned by the principal/supervisor and which may relate to committee work, student activities, student supervision or other planning and professional assignments.
  • Complete and maintain any required certification.
  • Prepare or assist in the preparation of a variety of logs, reports, files, reviews, etc.
  • Follow District Policies, procedures, and directives in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education related field.
  • Certification Required: ESL, Bilingual, or SEI Endorsement.
  • Teaching license required.
  • Pass a criminal history background check.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrate initiative and the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
