EKG Technician- PRN

About the Role

The EKG Technician is responsible for operating EKG machine(s) that record diagnostic cardiac activity for appropriate testing. This includes explaining procedures, preparing patients for electrode attachment, recording cardiac activity, observing findings, and generating reports for physician diagnosis. The technician also attaches various arrhythmia monitor devices such as the Holter Monitor or Zio Cardiac Monitor.

Responsibilities

• Perform electrocardiogram (EKG) tests on patients using EKG machines and related equipment.
• Prepare patients for EKG procedures by explaining the process, positioning patients correctly, and attaching electrodes to the chest, arms, and legs as needed.
• Ensure proper functioning and calibration of EKG equipment, troubleshoot any issues, and maintain equipment cleanliness and safety.
• Record and document EKG results accurately, including patient information, test conditions, and any abnormalities or deviations from normal cardiac rhythms.
• Collaborate with healthcare providers, including cardiologists and nurses, to relay EKG findings and assist in patient care decisions.
• Monitor patients during EKG procedures for signs of discomfort, distress, or adverse reactions, and respond appropriately.
• Maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to privacy regulations and ethical standards in handling cardiac data and patient information.
• Assist in scheduling and coordinating EKG appointments, ensuring efficient workflow and patient satisfaction.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Current certification as a Certified EKG Technician (CET) or equivalent certification preferred, but not required, OR documented on-the-job EKG training with at least one year of directly-related patient care experience in a healthcare setting.
• Experience in Holter Monitor scanning and Stress Treadmill procedures preferred.
• Knowledge of cardiac anatomy, physiology, and electrocardiography principles.
• Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and proficiency in recording and interpreting EKG data.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with patients and healthcare team members.
• Ability to prioritize tasks, handle multiple responsibilities, and maintain composure in fast-paced clinical environments.

Qualifications

• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required, either from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.

Physical Requirements

• Mobility to move around the healthcare facility and assist patients with positioning for EKG procedures.
• Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination to attach electrodes accurately and operate EKG equipment.
• Ability to stand for extended periods and lift/move equipment as necessary.
• Visual acuity to read EKG tracings and identify abnormalities.
• Emotional resilience and compassion when working with patients who may be experiencing cardiac-related issues.
• Ability to perform job functions while standing, sitting, or walking continuously.
• Ability to climb stairs infrequently.
• Ability to work indoors continuously and outside in temperature extremes infrequently.
• Ability to work from elevated areas frequently and in confined/cramped spaces frequently.
• Ability to perform job functions from kneeling positions infrequently.
• Ability to bend at the waist continuously and twist at the waist frequently.
• Ability to squat and perform job functions frequently.
• Ability to perform "pinching" operations frequently and gross/fine motor activities with fingers and hands continuously.
• Ability to reach overhead frequently and in all directions continuously.
• Ability to perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders continuously.
• Ability to fully use both legs continuously and use lower extremities for balance and coordination frequently.
• Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs. unassisted infrequently.
• Ability to lift/lower objects 50 lbs. from/to floor from/to 36 inches unassisted infrequently.
• Ability to lift from 36" to overhead 25 lbs. infrequently.
• Ability to exert up to 50 lbs. of force frequently (e.g., transferring patients, pushing wheelchairs or stretchers).
• Ability to maintain 20/40 vision, corrected, in one eye or with both eyes continuously.
• Ability to see and recognize objects close at hand or at a distance, match or discriminate between colors, and determine distance/relationship between objects (depth perception) continuously.
• Good peripheral vision capabilities continuously.
• Ability to maintain hearing acuity, with correction, continuously.
• Ability to maintain tactile sensory functions continuously.
• Ability to deal effectively with stressful situations continuously.
• Ability to work rotating shifts frequently and overtime as required frequently.
• Ability to work in a latex-safe environment continuously.
• Selected positions may require maintaining good olfactory sensory function and being qualified physically for respirator use continuously.

Pay

Hourly pay at Health-24 pay grade.

Schedule

• Scheduled weekly hours: 12
• PRN (as needed) position.
• Ability to work rotating shifts frequently.
• Ability to work overtime as required frequently.
