EKG Technician - Full Time

About the role

The EKG Technician performs EKG testing in all areas of the hospital as ordered by the physician. They are also responsible for responding to STAT and CODE calls, verifying the functionality of EEG and EKG machines, and preparing tracings for interpretation.

Responsibilities

• Responsible for obtaining an accurate and well-defined EKG tracing.
• Ensures the cleanliness and restocking of EEG and EKG machines according to department policy and procedure.
• Verifies daily that the EEG and EKG machines are functional; reports malfunctions per department policy.
• Responds to CODE BLUE calls and initiates a continuous EKG as outlined in department policy and procedure.
• Provides competent assessment, treatment, and care to patients according to their individual and developmental needs.
• Prepares tracings for interpretation, ensuring 24-hour turnaround time.
• Administers accurate and well-defined EKG tests.
• Prepares tracings for interpretation by physicians, typing all reports and delivering them to designated areas.
• Verifies patient identification via wristband and bed name plate on every patient.
• Explains the procedure to patients, alleviating their fears, and answers any and all questions according to department policy and procedure.
• Demonstrates competency in assessing, analyzing, and utilizing data for effective decision-making and performance improvement processes.
• Proofreads all typed interpretations, revising and changing as necessary to ensure accuracy, before submission or distribution.
• Explains and completes tests according to department policy, ensuring the patient is both at ease and comfortable.
• Reviews information on patients' charts, extracting pertinent information for EKG readings according to department policy.
• Prepares patient's head and sets up for test, measuring head and placing electrodes according to international 10/20 electrode system.
• Performs the test carefully, observing patient and tracing, making appropriate notations on tracing.
• Makes sure all pertinent information is listed on the tracing, such as name, date, age, floor, condition of patient, medications, and any other helpful information for the physician.
• Keeps a log of all completed tracings with name, date, and file number.
• Schedules outpatient appointments for testing in the appointment book.
• Maintains an accurate filing system for all tracings performed by storing on CD and archiving by number and year.
• Completes other duties and/or projects as assigned.

Qualifications

• High School diploma, general equivalency diploma (GED), and/or GED equivalent programs.
• Minimum of one year of specialized training in EEG or equivalent experience.
• Minimum six months experience in EEG/EKG.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficient computer skills that include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.
