EKG Technician

Responsibilities

  • Perform electrocardiograms (EKGs) on patients of all age groups as requested by the physician.
  • Perform graded exercise tests (GXTs) on adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients as requested by the physician.
  • Complete necessary tasks in McKesson as outlined in departmental policies and procedures.
  • Maintain clean and functional equipment and work area.
  • Demonstrate cost-conscious behaviors by efficiently utilizing equipment and supplies.
  • Respond to "STAT" calls and "CODE 10" situations as defined in departmental policies.
  • Perform basic cardiac life support as needed.
  • Identify and alert appropriate personnel in emergency situations.
  • Assist in covering all shifts as needed.
  • Observe and ensure patient responsibility and safety during procedures.
  • Perform duties in accordance with DCH policies, procedures, and standards of care/practice.
  • Participate in Performance Improvement activities.
  • Apply safety precautions relevant to patients of all ages (neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric).
  • Attend in-service programs, required training/education, and unit/department/service meetings.
  • Assist with the upkeep of supplies and equipment.
  • Assist with transportation of patients as needed.
  • Complete all assignments in a timely manner, establish priorities, and organize work effectively.
  • Maintain performance, patient, and employee satisfaction standards as outlined in performance evaluations.
  • Adhere to DCH Behavioral Standards, including creating positive relationships with patients, families, coworkers, and colleagues.
  • Perform essential job functions safely to ensure the well-being of patients, visitors, and employees.
  • Identify and reduce unsafe practices to minimize risks and hazards.
  • Use electronic mail, time and attendance software, learning management software, and intranet as required.
  • Adhere to all DCH Health System policies and procedures.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent with successful completion of on-the-job training for EKG and GXT.
  • Ability to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English.

Working Conditions

Physical ability to reach reasonable distances to handle equipment, respond in emergencies, and perform duties with or without reasonable accommodation. Requires fine motor skills, normal or corrected-to-normal hearing and vision, and physical presence onsite.

  • Exposure to human body fluids, disease, infection, lab chemicals, and hazardous materials.
  • Requires wearing common protective or safety equipment.
  • Medium workload with frequent contact with patients, physicians, coworkers, team members, and visitors.
  • May interact with individuals who are angry or aggressive; may require assistance from more qualified personnel.
  • Communication may occur via electronic mail, face-to-face, telephone, or letters/memos.
  • May be responsible for answering department telephones and working in groups or teams.
