EH&S Specialist (2nd Shift)

Support all Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) programs and issues to ensure the protection of employees from industrial accidents, occupational and environmental health hazards, and fire. Design, develop, interpret, recommend, and ensure compliance with environmental regulations and/or company policy in areas such as Workers Compensation, Occupational Health & Safety, Medical Assistance, or Environmental Engineering.

Responsibilities

• Safety verification on the operating floor (approx. 70% of role):
  • Verify compliance with applicable safety requirements through direct, continuous observation of equipment, work practices, and conditions while production is running.
  • Identify unsafe equipment and conditions, remove them from service immediately under delegated stop-work authority, and document findings.
  • Act first to mitigate risks where personnel are at risk, then report afterward.
  • Observe work practices as they are actually performed and coach employees at the point of work.
  • Conduct scheduled inspections of equipment, systems, emergency provisions, and workplace conditions; maintain inspection records for audits.
  • Use off-shift hours for documentation, procedure development, and records work, producing drafts for day-shift review and approval.
  • Engage directly with off-shift crews to surface hazards and concerns not raised through daytime channels.
• Occupational health and emergency medical response (approx. 30% of role):
  • Serve as the sole trained emergency medical responder on site during the shift.
  • Assess, treat within scope of practice, and independently decide to arrange transport or activate emergency services without on-site supervision.
  • Maintain emergency medical and first aid readiness across the site, including supplies, equipment condition, and responder coverage.
  • Track occupational health surveillance status of off-shift employees and coordinate scheduling for required evaluations or testing.
  • Identify off-shift tasks, processes, and exposures not captured by daytime occupational health and hygiene activity, ensuring they are addressed.
• Incident response and evidence:
  • Respond to incidents in a dual capacity—treating the injured and initiating investigations—while maintaining objectivity.
  • Secure the scene, capture physical evidence, photograph conditions, and obtain witness accounts before the end of the shift.
  • Provide a complete factual investigation package to the client’s EH&S lead for regulatory determination and reporting.
• Shift interface and escalation:
  • Produce a written shift record every shift, including shifts with no findings.
  • Distinguish between issues to resolve independently and those requiring escalation; escalate without delay for management authorization or external coordination.
  • Operate within the authority delegated in writing by the client and do not act outside it.

Requirements

• University degree or equivalent.
• Minimum of 3 years of relevant EH&S experience, preferably in a manufacturing environment.
• Current certification permitting unsupervised emergency medical assessment and treatment in an occupational setting, appropriate for a site with no on-shift clinical supervision.
• Scope of practice must be confirmed against the specific occupational health duties assigned to the role under applicable state licensure.
• Demonstrated capability to work an entire shift without supervision, direction, or escalation available, exercising independent judgment on safety and medical decisions.
• Sound written communication skills; the written shift record is the primary visibility into the shift for regulatory and corrective action decisions.
• Ability to hold a position under pressure, stop work, or remove equipment from service without immediate management support.
• Ability to maintain objectivity when responding to and investigating the same incident.
• Ability to work in an active manufacturing environment, including elevated areas, confined or restricted spaces, and outdoor conditions, in required personal protective equipment.

Pay

The pay range for this position is $34.00 - $34.00 per hour.
