EEG Technician - Neuroscience - PRN

At Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, the EEG Technician position is an entry-level to mid-level role that performs routine, ambulatory, and long-term monitoring (LTM) electroencephalograms (EEG), and/or visual, brainstem, and somatosensory evoked potential (EP) procedures according to hospital and departmental policies. Until competent, this position works under the direct technical supervision of a higher-level EEG Technologist, physician, or other appropriate clinician. Once competence is demonstrated, the role performs duties independently with technical aspects under indirect supervision.

Responsibilities

• People:

  • Performs patient assessments, including checking for allergies, movement restrictions, and cognitive function.
  • Stocks supplies, prepares patient rooms, and ensures equipment readiness for procedures.
• Quality/Safety:
  • Ensures correct electrode application per the International 10–20 System and recognizes clinically significant events.
  • Maintains patient safety through communication with support staff during procedures.
  • Performs basic and intermediate technical troubleshooting, artifact identification, and equipment safety checks.
  • Conducts EEG studies, including bedside studies, clinical EP studies, and epilepsy patient monitoring.
  • Reports near misses and errors promptly to improve processes and identify trends.
  • Ensures equipment is in safe working order, performs preventive maintenance, and reports malfunctions.
  • Contributes to corrective actions and improvement activities to meet departmental and hospital targets.
• Finance:
  • Provides accurate and complete documentation of patient procedures and enters charges at the time of service.
  • Submits reports, billing, and paperwork in a timely manner.
  • Uses resources efficiently, avoids waste, and reports low supply inventories.
  • Recommends solutions to achieve departmental objectives and manages time effectively.
• Growth/Innovation:
  • Participates in departmental projects and activities.
  • Seeks opportunities to expand learning beyond baseline competencies.

Requirements

• Education:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent (e.g., GED, homeschool equivalency, partial or full post-secondary education).
  • Preferred: Completion of an Accredited Electroneurodiagnostic (END) program or an Associate’s degree (or higher) in a science-related field.
• Experience:
  • Six months of experience performing END procedures in a patient care environment or successful completion of all clinicals in an approved END program.
• Licenses and Certifications:
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or Instructor certification (AHA) – American Heart Association.

Skills

• Demonstrates competencies necessary for safe job performance through ongoing evaluations.
• Basic computer knowledge, including data entry, document handling, and familiarity with Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office, and Adobe Acrobat.
• Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills with a focus on excellent customer service for patients, visitors, physicians, and coworkers.
• Knowledge of alternate montages, protocols, and equipment settings and their effects on test data.
• Understanding of correct EEG/EP performance and clinically significant events.
• Ability to maintain correct electrode connections and perform procedures under indirect supervision post-training.
• Proficiency in English (speaking, reading, writing) to ensure patient and employee safety.
• Effective communication with patients, physicians, family members, and coworkers in a customer-service-focused manner.

Supplemental Requirements

• Work Attire: Scrubs required; no business professional attire.
• On-Call: May be required during emergencies (e.g., disasters, severe weather).
• Travel: May require travel within the Houston Metropolitan area.
