About the role

The Missouri Department of Corrections seeks individuals who can transform lives and equip offenders with the skills necessary to reintegrate successfully into society. This role involves teaching adult offenders according to their educational background and certification.

Responsibilities

  • Teach subject matter appropriate to the offender’s educational background and certification by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
  • Adhere to the state-approved course of study while adapting to the needs, abilities, and conditions of the pupils.
  • Develop and implement plans for classwork within prescribed limits; prepare materials for special study.
  • Participate in teacher conferences, meetings, and educational research projects.
  • Maintain scholastic and attendance records; order necessary supplies.
  • Confer with students regarding their needs, progress, and abilities; provide instruction and encouragement as needed.
  • Receive general supervision from the Education Supervisor or designated administrator.

Requirements

  • Current teaching certificate issued by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), or meet the eligibility requirements for and be willing to obtain a Missouri DESE Teaching Certificate.

Qualifications

All requested documents must be received by the closing date listed. Additionally, contingent upon your position, you may be eligible to receive:

  • A $2.00 per hour shift differential if you are assigned to a shift that begins on or between 12:00pm (noon) and 5:00am and are employed at a 24/7 congregate care facility (i.e., institution, transition center, supervision center, or command center).
  • A $0.75 per hour medium security or $1.50 maximum security differential if you work full-time at a qualifying facility.
  • A $1.00 per hour restrictive housing differential if you are assigned a regular post within a restrict housing/segregation unit at any facility.

Skills

Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential, along with the ability to adapt teaching methods to individual student needs.

Pay

The Department of Corrections offers a guaranteed 1% pay increase for every two years of continuous service up to 20 years!

Schedule

Shifts may vary depending on the facility and position, but generally include a mix of day, evening, and night shifts.
