Position Summary

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, provide voice to sign and sign to voice interpreting and other support services for deaf and hard-of-hearing students in a variety of settings to facilitate communications between students, faculty, staff, administrators and others.

Education and Experience

  • Requires an Associate's degree in a sign language interpreter training program, deaf studies or a related area.
  • Requires one year of experience providing sign-to-English (expressive skills) and English-to-sign (receptive skills) interpreting in one or more sign systems/languages.
  • Additional related experience in an academic or similar environment may be substituted for some higher education based on two years of experience for one year of college.

Licenses and Other Requirements

  • By July 1, 2009 and thereafter, certified by the national Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID)
  • OR Achieve a score of 4.0 or above on the: Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA)
  • OR Achieve a score of 4.0 or above on the: Educational Sign Skills Evaluation-Interpreter and Receptive (ESSE-I/R)
  • OR Achieve a score of 4.0 or above on the: National Association of the Deaf/American Consortium of Certified Interpreters (NAD/ACCI) assessment.
  • Valid California driver’s license.

Testing Information

  • Step 1: Application Screening (pass/fail)
    • Applications will be evaluated and ranked according to criteria that most closely meets the needs of the department.
    • If there is a high number of qualified applicants, a comparative screening will be conducted to determine which of the applicants will be selected for invitation to the performance examination and qualification appraisal interview.
    • Applicants must pass the application screening to advance to the performance skills test and the qualification appraisal interview.
  • Step 2: Performance Examination (weighted 50%)
    • To be determined.
    • Applicants will work through receptive and expressive skill exercises which simulate the tasks that an Education Sign Language Interpreter is expected to perform.
    • Applicants must pass the performance skills examination to move forward to the next step, (qualifications appraisal interview).
  • Step 3: Qualification Appraisal Interview (weighted 50%)
    • To be determined.
    • All applicants must achieve a passing score in each part of the examination process in order to be placed on the eligibility list.

Details

  • New Hires – Initial Salary Placement: Education: The District has established criteria in place that recognizes the education and experience new employees bring to their role in supporting students and the services of the District.
  • Additional Salary Information: All new hires placed at Step 1 of the salary schedule will advance to Step 2 after successfully completing the six-month probationary period. Longevity increments are offered based on years of service with the District.
  • Education Incentives: All active, regular classified employees are eligible for an education incentive if they possess a college degree above and beyond the stated minimum qualifications for their classification.

General Requirements

  • Employment Verification: Federal law requires that the District verify the identity and employment authorization of each person hired, complete and retain a Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification, and refrain from discriminating against individuals on the basis of national origin or citizenship.
  • Tuberculosis Risk Assessment: Individuals selected for employment are required to submit to a tuberculosis risk assessment, and, if risk factors are identified, may be required to submit to a tuberculosis examination to determine freedom from tuberculosis.
  • Physical Exam: The District reserves the right to require a prospective employee to pass a job related physical examination.
  • Conviction Information and Fingerprints: State law requires that all selected candidates be fingerprinted to check for and/or verify conviction records.
  • Health & Welfare Plan Choices: Include Anthem CDHP PPO 90 with optional health savings account (HSA), Kaiser Permanente CDHP DHMO with optional health savings account (HSA), Anthem PPO Medical, Kaiser Permanente HMO Medical, Cash-in-Lieu option: Full-time employees (40 hours per week) who can prove they are covered by group medical coverage, may opt out of benefits to participate in Cash in Lieu at any time of the year (up to $5,000 per year, paid out in increments of $500 per month (September – June)).
  • Holidays: Approximately 14 paid holidays per year.
  • Vacation: The district provides for 1 day of illness leave per month worked, with unlimited accumulation for unused days.
  • Sick Leave: The district provides for 1 day of illness leave per month worked, with unlimited accumulation for unused days.
  • Retirement: Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) and Social Security.
