About the role

Under the limited supervision of the Principal, the Educational Interpreter provides interpreting and instructional support for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students; communicates using sign language, fingerspelling, natural gestures, and speech with students who are deaf and hard of hearing within the general education classroom, special day classroom, and for other school-related activities including extracurricular activities. Educational Interpreters with an Emergency 30-Day Substitute Teaching Permit or Teaching Credential may be assigned to substitute in the absence of the primary teacher. Assignments are at various instructional settings, primarily Salinas High School and Buena Vista Middle School.

Responsibilities

• Interpret for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students in general and special-education classrooms
• Provide interpreting support during school-related activities, including extracurricular events
• Substitute teach when required, if holding an Emergency 30-Day Substitute Teaching Permit or Teaching Credential

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Minimum score of 4.0 on one of the following assessments:
  • Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA)
  • Educational Sign Skills Evaluation: Interpreter/Receptive (ESSE-I/R)
  • National Association of the Deaf/American Consortium of Certified Interpreters (NAD/ACCI)
• Sign Language Interpreter Certification or equivalent as listed above
• Valid California Driver’s License with evidence of insurability
• First Aid and CPR Certification (within six months of employment)

Desired Qualifications

• Experience working with hearing-impaired individuals
• Coursework in education, psychology, child development, classroom behavior management, or Early Childhood Education
• Experience working with children
• Awareness of developmental levels in areas of instruction
• Knowledge of Deaf Culture
• Knowledge of Guidelines of Professional Conduct for Educational Interpreters
• Knowledge of assistive listening devices, including personal hearing aids
• Bachelor of Arts or Sciences Degree
• Emergency 30-Day Substitute Teaching Permit or Teaching Credential

Pay

$39.88 - $51.89 per hour

Schedule

• Monday – Friday
• 6.5 hours per day
• 183 days per year
