About the Role

The Educational Interpreter facilitates communication between deaf/hard of hearing students, providing interpretation in educational settings. Participates as a member of the educational team serving these students.

Responsibilities

  • Interprets spoken English into sign language for all communication in a school day, such as classrooms, lectures, lab, or other educational settings where conversations between deaf/hard of hearing students and anyone else are taking place.
  • Utilizes current methods of interpreting to best serve deaf/hard of hearing students, staff, and deaf parents with their communication needs.
  • Takes notes for students in various educational settings. Prepares lecture notes, ensuring accurate interpretation.
  • Previews video, PowerPoint and other media presentations in preparation for interpreting for deaf/hard of hearing students.
  • Interprets at student orientation sessions, various meetings and activities between students and student groups and staff; also interprets at IEP meetings as needed.
  • Meets regularly with the Deaf/Hard of Hearing teacher regarding the progress of individual students. Works closely with team teachers to ensure that accommodations are made for students.
  • Attends staff development sessions to maintain and upgrade skills.
  • Receives some work directions from licensed staff, including Deaf/Hard of Hearing teacher and/or case managers.
  • Attends mentoring sessions with an assigned mentor and/or attends staff development sessions to maintain and upgrade skills.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School diploma required. Highly Qualified status required.
  • Must have completed a training program affiliated with a state accredited educational institution.
  • Experience as an interpreter in a variety of situations involving the deaf/hard of hearing.
  • Knowledge of American Sign Language (ASL), Spoken English, Signing Exact English (SEE), Pigeon Sign English (PSE), and Minimal Language Signing modes; child development.
  • Skilled in ASL, SEE, customer service, problem solving, effective time management and prioritization.

Qualifications

To qualify as a sign language interpreter/transliterator, a person shall have completed a training program affiliated with a state accredited educational institution and hold one of the following:

  • An interpreter/transliterator certification awarded by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID); or
  • A general level of proficiency certificate at level 3 awarded by the National Association of the Deaf (NAD); or
  • Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) at the 4.0 level.

To qualify as a cued speech translator, a person shall hold a current applicable transliterator certificate awarded by Testing, Evaluation, and Verification Unit, Inc. (TECUnit).

Skills

  • Considerable ability to communicate effectively, listening, oral, and written.
  • Ability to establish rapport with others and to interact effectively with persons having a wide variety of cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Ability to handle multiple issues simultaneously; work without supervision and as an effective team member.
  • Ability to take a visual language and interpret it into English structural sentences and the reverse.
  • Ability to process signs while simultaneously voice interpreting, interpret at an educational level and language mode appropriate to each person.
  • Ability to give priority for facilitating communication of deaf/hard of hearing students within a hearing environment in both the spoken word into sign language and voice interpreting sign language into English.
  • Ability to be prompt, responsible and dependable.
  • Ability to use computer software applications to accomplish work tasks.

Pay

The minimum hourly wage for this position is $32.00 per hour.
