Educational Assistant - Special Education (LE2)

About the Role
The Educational Assistant – Special Education provides educational supports through instruction and supervision of students with disabilities under the direct supervision of a special education teacher, specialist, and/or classroom teacher. This role involves completing routine clerical tasks, assisting with students' special health care needs, and supporting students who may have academic, emotional, cognitive, physical, and/or sensory challenges.

Pay
- Salary Range 13: $25.09 to $34.38 per hour
Qualifications
Preference will be given to applicants with work or lived experience with culturally, linguistically, and racially diverse communities.
- Prior job-related experience, paid or volunteer, with school-age children
- Completed associate’s or higher degree, or completed at least two years of study at an institution of higher education (72 college quarter hours or more), or met a rigorous standard of quality and can demonstrate knowledge of and ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics through a formal state or local academic assessment
- Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance, First Aid/CPR card, and Bloodborne Pathogen training

Responsibilities
- Works under the guidance and direction of a Special Education Teacher, Specialist, and/or classroom teacher with access to assistance and consultation
- Assists teachers in implementing lesson plans and/or developing students' daily living and behavioral skills (e.g., hygiene and grooming, anger management, social skills) in both special classrooms and general education settings
- Provides instructional support to students in large groups, small groups, and one-on-one situations
- Adapts classroom work/homework under the direction of the teacher to support and/or reinforce individual and classroom learning objectives
- Administers first aid, medical assistance, and delegated health services (e.g., tube feeding, catheterization, toileting) to provide appropriate care for ill, medically fragile, and/or injured children
- Maintains specialized equipment identified for individual or classroom use to address student learning needs and ensure a safe learning environment
- Maintains classroom equipment and student files/records, including special education files, database entries for student collections, and Medicaid billing purposes
- Monitors individual students, classroom, and/or playground activities to provide a safe and positive learning environment and address individual student learning needs
- Performs record keeping and basic clerical functions, such as scheduling, copying, and supporting home-to-school/school-to-home communications
- Attends training and utilizes district-approved de-escalation and physical intervention techniques when needed in specialized and general education settings
- Develops materials for student IEP implementation
- Uses progress monitoring tools under the guidance of the teacher to determine student learning outcomes and collects other student performance data as directed
- Evaluates situations to take appropriate action and/or direct them to the appropriate personnel for resolution
- Assists with the transportation needs of students, including supervision during loading/unloading of buses and potentially riding the bus with students
- Participates in meetings, workshops, and professional development opportunities for continued growth
- Performs other related duties as determined by the teacher, specialist, or school administrator to ensure the physical and emotional well-being of students
Working Conditions
- Work is performed in district schools, including specialized and general education classrooms, as well as other areas across the school environment
- Involves continuous strenuous efforts, such as lifting students up to 50 lbs. without additional support
- May involve exposure to students needing personal hygiene, medical care, and/or physical interventions
Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit, stand, or walk for prolonged periods of time
- Ability to talk and hear conversations in a potentially noisy environment
- Use precise control of fingers and hand movement, often in repetitive motions such as keyboarding
- Reach for and handle objects
- Use close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
- Regularly focus on a computer screen
- Bending, stooping, kneeling, and lifting/moving up to 40 pounds may be required occasionally
