If the position is not filled with a bargaining unit member, outside applicants will be considered thereafter until filled. Projected start date: approximately September 2, 2026. This is a Dual Language Immersion (DLI) position and requires applicants to be bilingual (Spanish/English).
About the role
The Educational Assistant - Elementary/Middle - Media ensures the orderly operation and maintenance of the school media collection and provides library services to students and staff.
Schedule
6 hours per day, 182 days per year.
Pay
Salary Range 9: $22.29 to $30.54 per hour. Once bilingual proficiency is verified, pay increases to Range 10: $22.96 to $31.47 per hour.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- Highly Qualified Status (one of the following):
- Associate’s degree or higher
- At least two years of study at an institution of higher education (72 college quarter hours or more)
- Met a rigorous standard of quality and demonstrated ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics through a formal state or local academic assessment
- Prior job-related experience (paid or volunteer) with school-age children
- Fingerprinting and criminal background check (required for employment)
- Current First Aid/CPR card
- Preference given to applicants with work or lived experience with culturally, linguistically, and racially diverse communities
Skills
- Basic clerical functions, arithmetic calculations, and operation of standard office equipment
- Proficiency in English (verbal and written), including correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling
- Bilingual and biliterate in Spanish (preferred)
- Knowledge of child development and instructional processes
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of student records, meet schedules and deadlines, and interpret rules, regulations, and policies
- Ability to rapidly learn methods and materials used in instructional situations
Responsibilities
Essential Job Functions
- Manages circulation and collection using the automated system, including:
- Adding and deleting patron records
- Backing up data daily
- Adding and deleting materials
- Processing materials and running reports as needed
- Maintaining an inventory of the collection
- Monitors classes during library visits:
- Check-in/check-out of materials
- Reading stories (elementary)
- Supervising study hall or teacher-assigned work
- Supervising silent reading time
- Processes materials for library use: spine labeling, stamping, barcoding, and entering into the system
- Repairs and mends library materials as needed
- Assists students in the selection process and with computer work
- Trains and supervises volunteers for media center upkeep (e.g., shelving books)
- Acts as a representative of the media center:
- Fielding calls from parents and sales representatives
- Working with parent clubs and the public library
Other Job Functions
- Maintains general upkeep of the library
- Sets up space for classes and meetings held in the library
- Notifies staff and students of overdue materials in a timely manner
- Processes holds for students
- Promotes the library (e.g., bookmarks, posters)
- Creates bookmarks as needed
- Sorts media mail and maintains a file of vendor catalogs
- Keeps a list of teacher/student requests for ordering purposes
- Collects money and issues receipts for lost books; issues refunds if a book is found
- Maintains bulletin boards and seasonal displays
- Participates in lunch, recess, and dismissal duties as assigned by the principal
- Performs other duties as assigned
- Assists with student transportation needs, including:
- Walking students to and from the bus
- Supervising students during loading and unloading of buses
Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit, stand, or walk for prolonged periods
- Ability to talk and hear conversations in potentially noisy environments
- Precise control of fingers and hand movements (e.g., repetitive motions like keyboarding)
- Ability to reach for and handle objects
- Close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
- Focus on a computer screen for extended periods
- Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, and lifting/moving up to 40 pounds

- Maintain regular and punctual attendance; follow site/district protocols for reporting absences
- Dress professionally and appropriately for the assignment and work setting
- Maintain confidentiality regarding student, staff, and parent information

- Participate in required meetings and trainings related to the position
- If bilingual, may be requested to interpret, translate documents, or communicate orally in the second language
