Education Specialist (Special Education Teacher) - JCCC

Annual salary includes an additional $1.50 per hour maximum security differential ($3,120 annually) for all full-time positions domiciled in a maximum-security institution.

Responsibilities

• Teaches subject matter appropriate to educational background and certification by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
• Instructs adult offenders in state facilities in elementary or secondary school subjects, and related special education work.
• Confers with students regarding their needs, progress, and abilities; provides individual instruction and encouragement as needed.
• Delivers offender programming to include but not limited to cognitive behavior, financial literacy, workforce skills, etc.
• Adheres to state-approved course of study, exercising considerable ingenuity and flexibility in adapting a program to fit the needs, abilities, and conditions distinctive to pupils in a variety of state facilities.
• Plans and outlines classwork within prescribed limits; assembles and prepares learning materials for special study; administers and scores pre- and post-tests.
• Functions as a part of a teaching team; assists in developing, implementing, and evaluating individual education plans.
• Participates in teacher conferences, meetings, and educational research projects.
• Maintains scholastic and attendance records; orders necessary supplies and materials.
• Assigns and reviews work to ascertain that tasks have been performed as directed.
• Receives general supervision from an Education Supervisor or designated administrator, with review primarily for determining adherence to curriculum standards and maintenance of proper discipline.
• Performs other related work as assigned.

Requirements

• Current teaching certification in Special Education issued from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

Pay

The Department of Corrections currently offers a guaranteed 1% pay increase for every two years of continuous service up to 20 years. Additional differentials may apply:

• $2.00 per hour shift differential if assigned to a shift that begins on or between 12:00pm (noon) and 5:00am at a 24/7 congregate care facility (e.g., institution, transition center, supervision center, or command center).
• $1.00 per hour restrictive housing differential if assigned a regular post within a restrictive housing/segregation unit at any facility.
