Education Curator

About the role

Administrate and supervise the education branch and staff at the NC Maritime Museum at Beaufort. Supervise educational branch staff in curatorial-level technical work including secondary/teaching collections, taxonomic identification, exhibit implementation, publication writing and proofing, and in developing and implementing programming and special events that are part of educational branch responsibilities.

Responsibilities

• 30%: Administrate and supervise education branch staff responsible for daily public and school programming both in the museum and for outreach, special events, education program supervision, branch publications, and proofing museum publications. Determine short-term and long-range planning, daily workflow, staff assignments, budgeting, training, work standards, and performance reviews. Recommend budget, personnel, space allocations, dismissal, promotion, reassignment, and salary adjustments of education staff.
• 30%: Design and supervise execution of programs for the general public and school groups, teacher and professional workshops relating to maritime history, culture, and relevant marine science. Determine focus, content, staffing, organization, needs, and justification for education branch events and programs.
• 15%: Write job descriptions, interview branch curators, instructors and assistants, supervise and evaluate branch staff for all educational programs. Decide design, extent, content, scheduling, staffing, budget, facility use, and evaluation methods and responses for all educational branch programs.
• 10%: Provide expertise in the fields of museum education for the purpose of programming or exhibit development to museum staff, volunteers, and other qualified individuals and organizations.
• 5%: Supervise the use of teaching collections for the purpose of research and education.
• 5%: Supervise production of education program reports, articles, and publications. Decide which educational publications/materials to be published. Approve or suggest revisions for copy for all educational materials.
• 5%: Supervise education program volunteer training and recommend annual award winners.
• Serve on the museum’s leadership team.

Requirements

• Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of educational programming.
• Knowledge of history, maritime history, culture, and/or related marine education.
• Demonstrated experience in public speaking and/or programming.
• Demonstrated experience training and/or managing staff.
• Demonstrated experience with budgeting.

Pay

Recruitment range: $41,206 – $57,514
